Guarantees

Though you can’t bet
on this or that falling ball —
where it will land in the bell curve,
and you can’t count
on this or that seed —
if it will grow, if it will bear,
You can still count
on the filling in
of every niche
till every need is met.

It is the law of water,
it is the law of love
that in the snowmelt,
though some places
thaw more slowly,
every channel will deliver
down the mountain,
with mounting joy,
the full reward
for winter’s meditations.

It is the law of truth
that with abundant acts of life,
some will sprout,
enough will bear,
and you will be sustained.

The Law of Life

There is no wiggle
in the law that holds you,
no way to fall out of the cause
of your every movement,
no way not to be swept
in the wheeling intricacy
of the cosmic dance of all things.
No way not to act
according to your nature,
as simple as the goodness
of each intention,
as complex as
the allness of the law.

Cleansing

I’ve been foiled by this lie before:
The curling worm cringes in
and the fleeing form
sinks down —
This is flight mode,
hide mode,
play dead mode —

It is very effective:
If I try to pry it up
it goes all slidey,
try to lift it and it shrinks back down
The more I try to get it out
the more I am enmired

But I will not give up
If I can’t engage it
(and I can’t)
Then I will flood it out
Flood it with the consciousness
of every tiny, perfect life form,
every act of love under the soil,
every handclasp, every trust,
and all the harmony inherent
in the turnings of the sky,
let those fill me up
so there’s no room
for any lie.

Passage

Give me another turn
let me roll in flashing silver
down the curving spiral
waterway, way of light
Let me be delivered
in the way of
shining eucalyptus limbs
wet and gleaming in the half sun
between the rain

All this is —
integral, whole, contiguous —
can’t be mistaken
for anything it isn’t
All this is
displaces
anything that doesn’t have its essence —
Uncompromising fact
whose quality
outweighs all else,
scattering it,
defining everything.
In that royal splash
let me emerge
same as I ever was.

Companioned Prayer

Let me take you with me
on a prayer
Where we first plunge
into the wonder of our source —
The nature and the nurture of
the law that holds us
pouring forth the affluence of Life

Then in the insistent,
naturally occurring
alignment of our systems
with what always is,
we’ll feel the surging strengthening,
the calm and gentle ordering,
the unrestrained empowering
of everything we are —
Our hope, our worth, our destiny,
Our interwoven harmony,
The easy, brilliant artistry
written in the book of us
long before the birthing
of the stars.

The law of interaction

Let this be an article of my faith:
That every interaction
is designed to be healing,
That healing is reciprocal,
Mutually regenerative,
Engendering an escalating joy,
So affirming, in each of us,
Our power and our purpose
to co-create life
in just this way.

Then let me look around and notice
this same pattern, in every place repeated,
Life so fully and unceasingly
supporting life,
in interlock of movement, shape and rhythm.

This is you.
This is me.
This is Life, here and now.
This is what we must know to expect.
This is truth.
We can see it.
And we all know how
to birth healing
in every shared breath.

Falling

there’s no scrambling
against the falling
everything’s going down
falling like sand
plunging like avalanche
down and down

call it sadness
call it gravity
call it the way everything
must fall to its source
must home to its truth

and at the deepest core of truth
it can rest
rest in the ion-aligned place
where there is no doubt
no doubt at all
what it is
and from this clarity
it will, it must, rise
assert its centered essence
breathe and praise

Fluidity

From flashes in the corner of my eye
I start to sense
that what I operationally
have called reality
is completely fluid,
unanchored as water —
Which helps explain
the many times I’ve fallen through
when leaning into something
that I thought was real.

What I have called reality
is as fluid as thought
and changes just as deftly
as a dream
Not only in the sense of what is now,
but also in my thought
of everything that’s gone before

Fluid as thought
And anchored only in the forces
that control its waves
that weave the grand and languid dance
that nothing stops —
Each impulse’s momentum
playing out its power
Nothing forgotten
in the rolling course of life.

Tricks of the Light

It seems we are
so refracted from ourselves
That we don’t recognize these lights
as having anything to do with us,
So attracted to what seems
so out of reach
That we can’t trace
the inner spark from which they radiate.

These tricks with mirrors
make us feel alone
Closed off by glass
Confused by all the faces
that gaze back at us,
looking all the same —
Faces that wear all our fears, projected,
All asking something of us
that we can’t quite name

But all these lights are ours
And they reflect our center
And all these lights are us:
Through our own core
we enter
the place where we can soothe
all these eyes
Allay these doubts and fears
And let these facets
magnify the One.

Bearing Witness

These hills will move
at your insistence —
Just take the path of least resistance;
Like water, flow along the deep lines
So everything that’s shifty
can be undermined.

No need to try to climb
the mounded layers of lies
Or build up planks on which to justify.
The earth adjusts herself;
What’s low will rise,
Rocks will settle, sands will glide.
The truth remains untouched by all resistance;
These hills will move
at your insistence.
