Everything

Wood's Hole sunset

If this is really true
it changes everything

If we can always
in every place
meet our need to love,
find the way to harmonize
with anyone or anything that’s present

If today’s amazing flight
was not a miracle
but just the steady working
of a law that’s always been here,
an embrace around our shoulders
gentle as a swing push,
soaring as the moment of release,

Which synchronizes now
with my experience
because I know it’s true,
It changes everything.

What then, can I say about tomorrow?
— Watch and see.

What is True?

katama footprints

What is true?
Today it’s not enough
to have a theory

I need to go down with you
into the spiral
need to attune
to your invitation,
need to receive
this moment of gravity,
this weight that rolls on me
and off, that I roll into

What is true?
This can’t live in a cushioned cloister
supported by reasons
and explanations

This truth lives
in the radiation
through the bones and out
beyond the surface
of the inner infinite
that jumps into the dance of life
and rides.

Drawn

drawn cropped

Every one of us is drawn
with lovingkindness
to our truth

There is no need to push each other,
no need to direct, persuade,
cajole, dictate
another’s course

There’s no perspective
held by any one of us
that is the one
that everyone should use

We each are drawn
from where we are
to what we are —
Our truth, our love
will guide us

And we can trust each other
to be led,
however blind we may be
to each other’s leadings —
We can wait, and watch to see
the growing masterpiece
come in to view
in how we all are drawn.

Mind and Love

greenlake trees

The mind set free
turns naturally
to love —
Love’s expansive joy,
love’s boundless curiosity,
love’s keen attention to each fine detail,
each grand connection

The loops that chain the mind
hem love in, too —
The criticism, and the painful weight
of envy and comparison and judging

But they can’t stand
when love expands —
It breaks their loops
with sheer exuberance

And fills the heart with light
and sets the mind to flight
across the infinite and still unfolding realm
that is its home
when love is at the helm.

Your Truth

your truth

You can’t resist your truth.
By and by, it will overtake you,
make you see
the countless ways
you have been wrong.
But it will hold you
in such tenderness
that you will understand
you’ve always been approved of,
always loved.

No one else can resist your truth.
Though they may try
with edicts, ultimatums,
though they may think,
since you are dear to them,
that you should hear,
In the end they will admit your truth —
That, or you will lose each other.

Like a pupa, like a harvest,
truth ripens within us.
We may not know it when it’s small
but it will grow
until the day it bursts forth,
insistent,
and the protective stories
will split apart,
no longer relevant.
And truth’s form will be surprising,
elegant,
It will stretch out in perfect grace
and claim your day.

Tending the Field

field sky

The most important field you tend
is your reality.

Our thoughts make up the world —
the lines we draw,
our expectations, hopes and fears,
conclusions,
Determine what flows out
along our dream of day

So what you’re thinking now
is never trivial.

I owe it to my world
to lift myself
from all the mindless loopings
and the tedious replays
of all the things I wish
had gone my way,
And free myself from worry
and the frivolous distractions
that I use to keep the gnawing dread away

It’s time to stand:
What we are
can no longer be subordinate
to patterns no one ever has desired.
We can own
the field we call our mind
and be inspired,
We can insist
that only what serves life
be permitted to exist.

Glimmer

water surface

I can’t talk about this
because it’s too big —
bigger than a library of books
on how to find yourself, redeem yourself,
improve . . .

I must talk about this
because it’s so big —
big as the ocean’s crinkled surface,
responsive to each eddy,
every breath of wind . . .

I touch my feet to earth.
Beyond all words, I feel
the intersection of the circles,
every pulse connected,
tracing back to where I am enfolded,
and enfold the whole —
A glimmer of the key to everything,
big enough to satisfy my soul.

Essence

You brought your love in
like a fresh evening wind
sweetening your hair,
giving light and lift
to your face, your eyes

And I could breathe deeper
because you were here,
because of what you brought.

You had no fear
because it wasn’t about you
or about me, or the approval
of hidden voices that held the ear
of the board of directors,
wasn’t about opinions
or someone’s rigid template for perfection

It was as simple and as radical
as truth. That which can’t
be argued down
because it stands
in its own exquisite essence
ever renewed
from above, from within.

What does your heart want?

What does your heart want?
This one thing you can answer
without words, without posture,
without a sense of needing to be right

What your heart wants now
is how you’ll know
what to do. No definitions of yourself,
based on observations or conjectures
or the self-filtered opinions of your fellows,
have any clue

What does your heart want?
When asked, your heart will answer
in the impulse of a movement,
in the wisdom of the moment
and you’ll know yourself
by following its truth.

Naming it

Oh, I have been fooled
so many times,
so nearly constantly —
Cowed by an unnamed fog
to fail to move
(lest in moving I should fail),
to fail to see
(lest I see something that would wake me
to the need to move)

But now I will name the fog
and feel the fear roll off
in great waves,
billowing and blowing and dispersing
And I will stand
in new-created day.
