Stay

She came home  –
the little quicksilver
snuggly cuddly one,
the one who knows how to move,
who takes the spark connection
and rubs it up electric

She came home  – I asked her
where she had been
and she told me  –
it had been a soft escape  –
I had warmed the place enough
for her to return,
all furry and shiny
and bubbly and bright

She managed
to let herself drop like liquid,
coalesce from the tight places
where she had been wrung out,
squeezed beyond all recognition,
used as the engine for something
so unlike her essence

But she escaped
and came back softly,
and now I am intent
on keeping my space
kind enough
so she will stay.

Anatomy of Desire

Nov 21 sunset

I want to be astonished,
want to feel
something I couldn’t have expected,
want that awakening
into the sense that I’m
not in control, as I thought,
that some force much larger than me
is shown to have held the reins all along
so that all my assessments dissolve

Not that I crave helplessness
or even being overpowered
for its own sake,
Just that I want to be in awe

For awe impels my growth
into something I only faintly sense,
deeper and older than hope,
some destiny
worthy of my whole soul.

Secret Spring

To Edward

Come here again
and enter
this inner pool of me,
which, when you touch,
comes real
and I can go there, too —
Quench myself deeply,
Immerse myself
in what will glow afterwards
on my whole skin
and in the deep breaths I take,
an unnamed satisfaction
that fills up the entire void
amazingly —
that huge chasm
with one drop.

Elixir

Full-on Spring,
and the early day
hangs in a feather balance
of warm and cool,
each weighing in
with exquisite tenderness —
constant subtle shifting
singing against my skin
and the air
smells like blossoms and suburbs
and the sweet cleansing
of night breeze
when Spring flowed through me
in the play of mammalian warmth
and clear-sky coldness,
resting me and waking me up
at the same time.

Exploring Yes

I wanted this:
I wanted to be overcome,
Wanted the unknown mysterious tide
to rush through me, lifting away
everything I thought I was.
I wanted this internal suspension
Where my molecules,
With sudden phosphorescence,
Flow in a toroidal circulation,
Waking me all up inside.

I wanted this astonished state
of being rendered formless —
My caterpillar body melting
in its chrysalis —
Feeling in an ongoing surprise
The newness taking shape within.

When we are done, I’ll soar —
Of this I’m sure
though I can’t fathom how,
or what I’ll be
For I am drawn to this
with all my essence —
This yes to you is yes, still more,
to me.

My body’s yes

What is it
that calls my body’s yes
in the middle of the night?
— The yes that knows
with the certainty of weather
how to move —
How to flow along the thermal currents
Steady as progressing clouds across the sky
Soft as air
Warm as breath
Smooth as steam

What is the I Am in you
that calls forth this response
somewhere beneath the layers
of directed thought?
I found myself, within myself,
in awe,
Embodying a grace I’d never known,
Inhabiting a place of
effortless, continuous engagement
With some imperative
delectable
ineffable
presence of you.

Falling to yes

There are so many yeses in this world
A yes to each cascading course of water’s fall
A yes to leaves surrendering to soil
A yes to seeds that nestle in for winter
to live the chill that later triggers them
to rise up with the upswing of the seasons

A yes to eyes that meet and know relationship
A yes to recognition of a kindred soul
A yes to dance
A yes to touch
Yes to the silent, smooth synchronization

Yes to your breath, yes to your voice
Yes to your fingers’ call
In a response that transcends choice
My body
says yes
to it all.

Ocean

Our union was like
Ocean . . .
Ebullient waves coming
in and in and in
Flipped and turned by rocks, diverting
Cross waves rolling in on top of others
Circling, turning
Flowing back, down and down and down
into the place they meet
the flow of other waves
Fold on fold of froth, pristine and soft

Each one in its time, none in a hurry
Time to find each crevice in the rocks
Time to curl around inside them
Time to flow like waterfalls returning
On and on until the next wave’s crash
White spumes leaping
Water heaving, churning

Our breathing and our flowing
was like that ocean —
So many separate infinities
crossing one another in a timeless rhythm
So much life, such presence
Such imperative of motion
A place we shall return
time and again.

Longing

They are pacing around inside me
though I am not moving;
Though I’m sitting still,
you may see the darting
of some of them
looking out my windows —
My desires
who have nowhere to go
till I get home

And they drove me today
to go stand on the dock
in the warm wind and rain
To dive in and swim
with purposeful strokes
not towards any destination I could reach

They drive me to cram delight
into these last days
They stretch me taut
and strangely brighten
the moments that remain
before our paths bring us together once again.

Soul Kiss

For you to take all that you need,
Greedily drinking from the great infinity,
Feeds me, too —
If you have made me conduit,
All that bright strength
whooshes through me on its way to you
So we rise together
Cleaving to the vast eternal stream
In every breath regenerated
Reengaging with our ancient dreams.
