Keystone

This is our foundation
Octahedral core
Locked together in a structure
that stands firm
holding open
the arches of energy
so great currents
of light
of power
can spiral through
up and down

We stand here strong
Holding it
At one in our service
to the elemental rhythms
At one like the sides of an arch
Our love the keystone.

Longing

They are pacing around inside me
though I am not moving;
Though I’m sitting still,
you may see the darting
of some of them
looking out my windows —
My desires
who have nowhere to go
till I get home

And they drove me today
to go stand on the dock
in the warm wind and rain
To dive in and swim
with purposeful strokes
not towards any destination I could reach

They drive me to cram delight
into these last days
They stretch me taut
and strangely brighten
the moments that remain
before our paths bring us together once again.

Companion

When I ride
you are with me
You and I together
float above my sight to the left
embracing
while the beach scape
rolls out beside us
and the morning clouds
white after their metamorphosis at dawn
look on
And I feel the satisfaction of togetherness
while my legs pump up the hills
And it’s a shared experience
the way the wind pushes
at my face as I glide down
arms now spread wide —
a well-earned flight —
I take you with me
so your heart will know me,
so our hearts
will recognize each other from afar.

Destiny

It is no miracle
for Life to put us each
in our perfect place
For grand improbabilities of events
to make us converge
at the right site
and the right time
in the right readiness
to be the perfect gifts
for each other
It is as simple and steady
as the great breathing in and breathing out
of days, of tides
of heat that rises and falls
and vapors that return as rivers
to the sea

All these things accord with Life’s intent
to manifest itself, and so it does —
Our harmony insured
by what Life is:
Its fiat forms the worlds
and also us.

Dream Dancing

While you’re dancing
on the other coast
I am dreaming
not yet in sleep
though I should be—
dreaming of dancing
not in rooms but in galaxies
currents of cosmos swirling
under and around
curling and flourishing
at light speeds
where distance is no object
and time not either
and our streaming together
sends great sparks
across that dome that we have called the sky.

Going away

The days trip merrily
like mountain streams
collecting memories
and undone things
Pooling deep
in new hopes and dreams
Leaving so many intentions
helplessly behind

Then suddenly
the cataract of imminent departure
approaches, and the urgency speeds up
and as the last tasks get tumbled into
or left behind,
In the swift pause before the fall
I find
a sweet tug:
Gentle pangs of coming separation
Stretching out the net of our connection

All is well
It’s good to feel this pull
It shows
that even from afar we’ll know
the movements of each other—
Each other’s dreams
Each other’s yearnings
Each other’s tidal swells and drops
Lending a harmonic chord
to everything we do
Heartstrings’ duet—
A kind of double view
to all our days apart:
Stretched across the span of time and space
We each will thus hold one another’s place.

Twilight, Green Lake

Down under the trees
We watched the slow darkening
of green leaves
against the blue of sky
viewed from below
while evening’s glow
settled on the lake

And we had no hurry
We had time to rest like stones
Releasing the day’s heat into the night
And we could speak in low tones
Close enough to hear each word
To feel the peaceful rise and fall of breathing
And the ease of shared feeling,
Understanding rising as the light receded.
Relishing the much needed
stretch of growth together
Like these trees that gain their inches
in the dark.

Amends

A heart that has been touched
will turn
walking back along the path of words —
things said in hope of being heard,
whose impact may have singed another:
“No, that wasn’t what I meant —
I didn’t mean to cause you pain
I only wanted to be seen
Please let me make it right again”

Back along the path
Running now, to close the distance
Running, hoping not to trip
To reach you, and . . .

What’s needed here
is not more explanations
Such words, I fear, would only further tangle
Just let me take the time to stop
to witness you
To listen and to hear
Behold you
and really see
Breathe with you
until you know:
When your heart spoke,
Its language stopped me in my tracks
Made me turn back.

Illumination

You and I
together
Make an arc of golden light
A hearth, a home
And the warm bright
aura of its circle
Halos each of us
throughout our disparate days

And it is right to understand
that such a glow
will cast its comfort
further than the bounds
of you and I
It’s fitting that our love
Light up the sky.

Beach Walk

Bright morning
Walking on the driftwood
Walking on the sloped beach
whose fist-sized stones
roll sideways under foot
Watching rows and rows of tiny breakers
cresting in and in along the shore
Their quiet slaps then echoed in the distance
with the shift of stones —
rock on rock rocking in receding waves

Standing heron, flying gulls, ducks
bobbing out in lines across the waves
Smell of sand and seaweed, sea
Warming sun
paints with shadows on the sand behind the rocks
Scrish of our footsteps
You and I
walk together, holding hands
sharing stories of our soul journeys
where we go alone
but come together
vectors and trajectories converging
Throwing off old baggage and untying every tether
Awestruck with hope to see
eternity emerging.
