Mirrors

I think your soul is beautiful
because you mirror me
I see myself seen in your eyes
and what I see you see is beautiful

I see your soul as beautiful
and can’t believe
the things you say about the dark inside
since they don’t match the light I see
when I see you see me

You think my soul is beautiful
Not for my native talents
Not for my hard-earned insights
Not for my steady tending, through the darkness
of my inner flame
But for the way I saw you beautiful
when you saw me
when I felt you knew my inner name.

Falling to yes

There are so many yeses in this world
A yes to each cascading course of water’s fall
A yes to leaves surrendering to soil
A yes to seeds that nestle in for winter
to live the chill that later triggers them
to rise up with the upswing of the seasons

A yes to eyes that meet and know relationship
A yes to recognition of a kindred soul
A yes to dance
A yes to touch
Yes to the silent, smooth synchronization

Yes to your breath, yes to your voice
Yes to your fingers’ call
In a response that transcends choice
My body
says yes
to it all.

Freedom to Marry

(Regarding Washington State’s passage of Referendum 74)

Today I’m breathing freer
because Tuesday
We pushed the sky
up a little higher
So there’s more room to breathe together
in this tent we share
There’s a larger space for all of us
to celebrate care

And we move a little closer
to the understanding
That every love is sacred, holy, good
And every love commitment
is a wonder and a gift
that warrants open honor and support

And we move a little closer to the proving
That law is never properly tyrannical
That we can trust our inner truth to guide us
And don’t need to be pushed about externally

And love is love whoever does the loving
And we need more of it
and never less
And each of us can know
our love is beautiful
In each relation bringing out the best.

Night Walk

In the space between our palms
(our fingers clasped,
 our slightly swinging arms
familiar and enchanting as we walk along)

In the space between our palms
there is a world
Contained, enclosed, but infinite
in its scale
Planets glide around small stars
Warm energy converges in the center

And messages can be conveyed
across the sphere
Not words, not anecdotes
not concepts and conclusions
not tasks or resolutions
but something better
The simple joy of being here.

Stillness

We moved together like waves
And then
I filled with limpid stillness
Though I could feel
the responsive column
through the depth of it
How any perturbation
would touch all of it

Nothing was moving
It was weightless, blessed
And I held it there
Nestled in your arms
for as long as the moment
of inertia
In the balance
of utter security
In the settled peace
of two.

Current

Music brings us together:
The songs we heard then,
when we hear them now,
Suffuse me with the same softness —
The same streaming of our shared current —
Fill me with the hum of that vibration
in which we feel each tuning
of each other’s thoughts

Togetherness is its own music:
Weaving of counterpoint and harmony
The impress of our love upon eternity
And the inclusive hold it has on us.

Perfect

To Edward

It’s perfect
the way we travel together
Comfort in time, rhythms aligned
Compatible blend
of ease and adventure
Relishing all that we find

It’s perfect
the way we’re evolving together
Questings so similar
Thought currents parallel
Wonderful mixing
of longing and insight
Confluence of spirit and mind

It’s perfect
the way that we now come together
Our movement as one
like chords in a song
Exquisite expression
of tender connection
as bright as our lights ever shined.

Precipice

You may be daring
and brilliantly alive
But I still can’t watch you go
prance on a precipice

Yes, I’m a little bit wrong here
Yes, I know caution is tippy
And faith in your balance —
My certain conviction
of your sure perfection —
Serves many times better
to safeguard your person
than all of my worries
and cries to be careful

I know it’s the same for me —
Times that I know
that although you can’t stand it
you know you must let me be free

You care that I care
And I feel that way, too
So we come to a balance
of what we will do
At times for each other
we’ll dial back the daring
And sometimes we’ll deftly belay
And sometimes we’ll hold
to the faith in our caring
and keep ourselves out of the way.

Ocean

Our union was like
Ocean . . .
Ebullient waves coming
in and in and in
Flipped and turned by rocks, diverting
Cross waves rolling in on top of others
Circling, turning
Flowing back, down and down and down
into the place they meet
the flow of other waves
Fold on fold of froth, pristine and soft

Each one in its time, none in a hurry
Time to find each crevice in the rocks
Time to curl around inside them
Time to flow like waterfalls returning
On and on until the next wave’s crash
White spumes leaping
Water heaving, churning

Our breathing and our flowing
was like that ocean —
So many separate infinities
crossing one another in a timeless rhythm
So much life, such presence
Such imperative of motion
A place we shall return
time and again.

Thirty Years

(To Edward)

Thirty years
and we are like
the newlyweds we seemed to be
back then
when hope stretched out across the span
of inexperience

Excitement for the joining
and the journey
fueled those early times
Propelled us through
the doubts and disappointments

In some ways
our love has grown quietly
like the pine beside our front door
from its sapling start to where
it towers above the house
It didn’t happen in one day
but after time
it stood as if it always had been there
Inimitable sign of long duration

In other ways
our life has brought our love
through metamorphosis
The eager feeding of those early years
replaced by quiet inwardness
(though still the growth continued)

Till now
when in these bright monarch days
Our love has re-emerged
its colors shimmering
We feel it flexing
strong brilliant wings to lift us
to new vision.
