Swimming

I don’t want to ever again
stumble
amid the rocky mazes
of social mores
Or ever bark my shins
against my own obtuseness,
My failures to anticipate
how something I might say or do
may have a bad effect
on someone else.

The tide has risen
and I now move
in a different, kinder medium
Where, in the main,
my weight is born
by that in which I swim
And the soft currents we create
uphold a natural coordination.

I will insist on moving in this ocean.
If, again, the tide goes out
and if I find myself
marooned amidst the ruins
of expectations,
I’ll stay still and watchful
Tenacious as a mussel
till the tide returns
and I can swim again.

Synergy

By your light I am illumined,
By your grace, I’m magnified;
By the gift of your unmuted shining,
I’m enriched beyond all swift surprise.

By your listening ears my voice is called;
By your dance, my eager spirit leaps;
To your song, my own tone rises up
to hum, to tune, to blend with your clear voice.

How can I then describe
what this has meant?
(A glimpse enough to open up a world)
— a treasure that I never could imagine
or invent —
Such wonder now evoked!
Such potency revealed!

A Vision

In the vision
I was mother,
and from my outstretched arms
flowed liquid light.
And many came to drink,
And I was Mother,
Held steady as the conduit
of love
that those who drank
evoked in me.

Coursing mother-love
circled in a circuit
Filling me with joy,
with joy and fierce protection,
Joy and wonder.
And as I watched
One and another
filled with light.
They rose like stars;
We greeted each other as equals,
And they turned outward,
Conducting light,
Moving to serve it
as they each were called.

Presence

Through the night
Between my dreams
I feel you next to me —
Your solid warmth,
The smoothness of your sleeping form —
Comforting company.

Throughout the night
We hold each other in our trust
Our solidness
less of our frames
Than of the blended habits of our thoughts
That keep us reaching for each other
Touching home across the wide domain of dream.

And so it is at day
When the harsh winds of your contracted duties
bear you away
While I attempt to find the heat
to forge my purpose:
Our thoughts reach out across the miles
to wrap each other up
Embrace each other in the shared support
of steady love.

Sonnet

There’s nothing new about this longing
How it rolls up, like mist across a lake
And hovers, haunting and etheric
Obscuring the horizon with its grey
This urgent need for contact and belonging
Cries out for feeding, many times a day
A quest for soft, shared heat, and mingled breathing
A constant call, that doesn’t go away
We once were weaned, or so we may have thought
To self-sufficiency, a virtue (so we’re taught)
But to remember, once, this grand connection
Sends our sufficiency to forge a new direction
To weave our lives so we can be together
In comfort and in shared support, forever.

Believing

Maybe
the greatest thing you’ve ever done
is to believe in someone.

Maybe
the anchor of that trust
led someone’s roots
to the deep place of sustenance
where they could pull strength
steadily up into their being
springing forth in beauty and blessings.

Maybe
the best thing you can do
is to believe in someone’s love
For in that flourishing
(the most fulfilling part of their unfolding)
You, too, may find the bounty
that nourishes and brightens
all your days.

Rolling

My love is a deep river
Calm and rich and full
If you step in, you’ll be enveloped
Carried in its rapid, steady flow

My white waters fall
to a smooth bowl
Carved a perfect round
from much coursing
Bubbles rise up after the plunge
Sunlight leaps in bright rejoicing

My love is an adventure
As new for me as it may be for you
I know it’s ocean-bound and well established
Still, each turn provides
an unexpected view

Roll, roll with me
Be gathered, swept along
Bring your streams to merge with mine
Bring your song
Great power will roll with us as we surge
Great wisdom will splash forth
as we emerge.

Resolutions

As Cassandra knew,
Seeing someone’s future
is no more useful
than seeing someone’s problem —
You can’t tell them about it
Can’t get them to believe, or to reform

It shouldn’t be surprising —
No one else is different from ourselves
And we have always found
these resolutions to reform
to be contrary escalators
Plunging downward
much more rapidly
than we can rise.

Close your eyes
The winter sun that sparkles on the water
Still flickers, strobe-like, underneath your lids
The light still loves you,
Still knows how to touch
each dream that you, from fear of failure, hid
Your truth still owns you, and it knows
how every part of you is put together
Already worthy, cherished, ever whole
Not needing harsh reform to make you better
No need to reinvent yourself, no way to fall
And as it is with us
it is with all.

It’s time

OK, friends
OK, winds and clouds
OK, hidden sliver of silver sun,
Silent magic snow, birds warbling at dusk —
I’m ready for that miracle
Ready for some brightness
that I didn’t make myself
Ready for some joyful laugh
to overwhelm the trembling cusp of sadness
Ready for that surprising gift
of simple presence
to move me from this place
to where I flow again
Swift cascade of river
Leaping homeward
Singing constant
through the night.

Acceptance

In your gaze today, I felt
the difference it makes
How well we know each other
How deeply we connect
How thorough the acceptance
in our embrace,
The fractal path affection travels
in its love of every surface, every pore,
Making us impervious
to any judgement, any condemnation

How comfortable we rest
in the sweet cradle
of being wholly held —
So soundly integrated
So at one
with the vast, eternal orbit
that swings us charmingly
So we unerringly
reverberate in tune.
