Riding the Wave

So unfolds this great wonder,
that in surfing the waves
we discover their power
as we discover our own

It unfurls in each moment —
miraculous it feels —
how perfectly the forces come together,
formed and foamed and filled and braided —
what we can do and
what is here most needed

We may feel we only have
a fleeting tolerance
for so much power,
for such exhilaration,
but we will learn
this is the crest of life
and we will ride it
through the whole span of creation.

Needed

The magic of you
is in the place where you find yourself
drawn to where you’re needed
like deer to a waterhole

Your life blooms here —
bright growth along the vein,
your presence makes this wilderness
rich with heart, with meaning

The pattern stays
even when the water
has seeped away —
you are marked by this place
even as it is marked by you.

Morning Prayer

Pick me up gently,
set me straight,
remind me where I come from,
where I’m going,
not a robot, banging head
against the wall,
time and again
confounded by a corner

You set my face
towards the wide spaces
where the sun summons
the morning mist
and slowly melts it off,
rolling out brightness,
rolling out blue

And all the angles I was worrying
dissolve — there are no corners here —
just the day,
the love-sourced day.

News Flash

We are not passengers —
we are the horse

We are the ones running
and each of us can feel
the surprise touch,
each of us can be awakened
from our sense of waiting
for someone else to do the miracle
so we can cheer

We already are the miracle,
we already are the shining
of Love’s children —
look at us
I mean look at yourself
on the inside

You’ll see it, that chain of light
all laced through you,
the one you fight for every day,
the one you live for

We are the miracle
and nothing stops us
from running through to claim it.

Reassessing

And if it turns out
the rules we’ve been playing by
are not the real ones,
if it turns out
the object of the game
is not what we thought
and all our cheering on
and all our disappointments
all this time
have been askew
from how the actual score was counted

We may find
we still have made
progress we weren’t noticing —
skills attained, if faultily employed,
and gains that came
from bringing our best efforts
to what we thought, till now,
had been the game

And then we’ll have a new focus,
and then the way we move will change
as we employ a more attuned alignment
and stretch into our fuller range.

Faustian Bargain

You need no faustian bargain.
All the gifts you ever have desired
are yours immutably,
before time, perhaps before embodiment,
in full force still.
You can claim them
without a catch, without a price

They all are yours to give,
and, in giving, yours to bless.
In blessing, you are blessed,
along the circle leading back to your desire,
continuing and ever new,
as it is written,
as it will ever be.

What I Need

There’s no turning back —
all the contexts, after all,
are so quickly forgotten —
those things we thought would be
so worthy to attain
no longer shining with the same allure

It’s not that I mind
the ease in my days,
the gentle cooling
in the summer wind,
the time to breathe in consonance
with bees and flowers

Just that what I’m called to
is something more
than what I had assumed would be enough –
more than ease and comfort,
more than entertainment,
more than heady thoughts
on how I think and feel —
I need it more than image,
more than branding, more than tribe —
something that will show me I am real.

Motivation

How we each got to this place
is actually irrelevant,
as are the stories we have spun
to justify our current situation

What motivated us
is deeper than any of these things,
deeper even than what we thought we wanted,
and even what we knew we needed

What motivates us
has power to overcome
all the particulars
of time and place,
all the ins and outs
of history and reasons

What motivates us
will keep on burning
while all the papers fall away
and in the end,
beyond all of our roles,
in fearless clarity
it will shine.

Keepers

Be thankful for the day —
it is enough
to tuck the old man in,
to see the comfort
of soft sheets around his chin

It is enough
to have accomplished
the simple tasks
and to have felt the soft burn
of inner fire, curling
at the base of being,
connecting us to eternity
and the truth no lies can cover
and the clear direction that it gives,
untouched by any turbulence of time,
bearing us silently
into our role
as keepers of the stars.
