In this lifetime

In this lifetime
There is no “not”—
Sweet soul,
Though worlds may seem to wheel
beyond your reach,
Great stars blinking
lightyears away
Though your high teachers
may seem to move
behind a veil
which no travail
can pull you through
And though you’ve felt you failed,
with nothing more that you could do

Rejoice, for this lifetime
— long enough for every dance of grace —
of galaxies, of atoms;
too short for any tedium —
each moment needed, magical —
Has every joy that you can dream
And calls for you to claim it,
Own your name:
In this life
there’s time
for all of you to shine.

Sustenance Prayer

Hold my days, Spirit
Hold my days —
I won’t find satisfaction any other way
You are the wind that moves all;
It’s so clear
Nothing else is substance; nothing else
is even here

You are the breath of my desire and its fulfillment
You provide the inner fire
and the inner stillness,
my going out and coming in,
My home and my adventure
Each thrill, each triumph, every friend
And all I can imagine

It does no good for me to build my dreams
with bricks of circumstances, things and schemes
Which are ephemeral
as ripples intersecting
They flash and disappear, and no projecting
of meaning onto them can make them last
(They only glint in future and in past)
But that which moves in me and gives me life
Sustains me always,
Always makes me thrive.

Clarity

Everything about my being
comes from my source
Not from the channels into which I flow
Not from the interactions that engage me
So if I feel splashed, diverted,
sullied or depleted,
I only need to turn
back to where the primal fount
of who I am
springs forth
and bubbles boldly
into being
and courses forward
Strong and pure and clean
Affirming and defining me again.

The key

This could be
the key to the whole world
More than that —
This could be
the key to the whole whorl,
the whole whirl —
the whole moving
whooshing
harmonic of being —
to flying, to riffing
to breathing, to seeing

The key to the infinite joy
which the teachings
have tried to lay out all along
So what was too high to aspire to —
impossible —
Turns out to be elemental, essential,
that which we simply must be

This is the way we exist in the oneness
The vast fractal matrix for everything, all of us:
Every glory is already here
And our life is now found
as we fling ourselves into it
Finding with joy
Our surrender is met in acceptance
as we’re illumined in multiplication of love

This is the key,
and to share it, we just have to be it
Daily and constantly
dance this delight, until each one
can feel it and see it.

The necessity of trust

Here is the openness of trust:
that, all permissions granted,
in freedom to do anything we want,
the things we choose
will trend toward what will bless

That in the field where nothing is forbidden —
No kind of movement,
words, thoughts or emotions —
Our own divinity will guide us with precision
to grace of body, mind and interaction

Here is the necessity of trust:
Each gift we have needs freedom to unfold
to stretch out perfectly
and fill its purpose
Not from a regiment imposed on it
But because, internally
it must.

Kids playing soccer in the park

Focus power
Focus kinetic skill
Concentrate the energy
Make it do your will
Let it return, so it can fulfill
that sense of presence
that brings you joy
though you don’t name it
nor consciously employ the game as therapy

For you it’s fun
But there is more to it
for in your sending forth
and trapping back
you have created some kind of spirit track
The vectors emanate from where you run
You and the ball and field becoming one
magically connected to your team

So suddenly I understand
This isn’t pointless playing with a ball
This is the growing practice of command:
By owning this part of your world
you own it all.

The Vision

The way of being that I so desire
may not be all that far from where we are
—A state to reach, not waiting
but by steady practice:
the art of seeing underneath facade
to what the fact is,
seeing beyond persona to the realm of Soul
where we can know ourselves
and see each other whole

And when our countenance —
the way we feel inside —
gives up its clenched up fears
and opens wide
We’ll find ourselves
with no resentment, no complaint
No stultifying inhibition, no constraint
No more defined by blindnesses and failings
Or by the things we wish to leave behind
But by the moving edge where we are sailing
Along the wide expansion of the mind

It is a coming that cannot depend on death
but on the present power
of every breath.

Serenity

This morning when the 5:30 alarm blared,
Wrung from sleep, I noticed
that the Lord’s Prayer
was singing in my mind
And it remained there
left over from my dream
And it continued
its words and melody into my day
So I considered
How do I let myself be so centered
that every breath of Spirit moves me?
How does my agenda stay
on how the law of Truth can use me?
— I held it dear, this clear intention
let it sift and order each dimension
let the songs, kaleidoscopic, overlap
let my memory keep coming back
to that keynote: to only seek to serve.
— thus coming into evening in serenity
savoring this small taste
of eternity.

Infinite Permission

The One who made you
never said
Only take a little love
a polite small serving
(being sure to leave plenty
for everyone else)

The One who made you
never said
Just show a little of yourself
not enough so anyone has to notice
(don’t be a spectacle)

The One who made you
gives you infinite permission
to take all the love
you possibly can
(for in taking love, you multiply it)

The One who made you
gives you infinite permission
to shine forth everything you are
(for otherwise,
Why would you have been made?)

Lifelines

Many years ago,
a dozing vision told me,
“You have a lifeline to a star.”
I sat up, alert, obscurely comforted
that any chasm I might face
could hold no threat
and that no danger loomed
of finding my life dull and flat
I had a lifeline to a star!
and it would lift me up
across light years and eons
to my dreams

Little did I know
I have so many lifelines —
distant stars the least of them —
right here
Wind touched willow singing in the sun,
Gentle currents sliding softly,
All the gems of eyes that can connect
are lifelines holding everything together
I move and feel them pull against my chest
Inviting me to heft them, find their swing
and catapult myself
in heady, death defying joy
hand over hand along their awesome web
through this bright day.
