Americans

We are actually much deeper
than the stories about ourselves,
the tragic, unanchored drifting,
vertiginous sense of not knowing,
of having no basis for deep compassion
and decisive action.
We are not those shallow people
who accumulate stuff
and blame others
for the lack of joy in our lives.

This is who we are:
Grounded in truth. Formidable.
Able to demand fairness for all,
able to protect the sovereignty and dignity
of every living thing.
Able to say no to the growing, rolling
ball of lies that tries to drag us under,
Able to stand as strong
as any long-oppressed survivor,
able to see love win.

A Moment

For an instant,
in my prayer,
I saw all the darkness of the world
as being short as a breath —
an exhale awaiting the inhale,
an infant’s need reaching out
to be gathered into loving mother arms,
And all the world’s travails,
throughout all time,
as just that moment of the asking,
calling forth the full embrace
that brings us all in and in
into the truth of everlasting Love.

Desire as Prayer

The strait and narrow way
is made entirely of yes,
and so, to know my yes
is my salvation

Desire is prayer,
and here is my desire,
uncensored and unspoken,
only understood
in the resolution of my heart,
the longing of my soul, my lips, my skin

Here is my prayer
answered in the gravity of being,
the seated ground, centripetal cohesion
in which I am aligned with all I am

Though I may have no words
or even images,
no explanation of what this might be,
I feel it here, with all of my existence:
Prayer is answered;
this desire
will keep on guiding me.

Structures

Let me release myself
from structures that have washed away my depth —
the headlong chutes
of expectations and assumptions,
and criticism’s unforgiving hardpan.
Let me take time
for Life’s slow flow —
luxuriating stretching of connection —
nourishing exchange of living substance.
Let Life’s structures grow
according to the rules
that Life alone can set
and let me fill my tiny place
in this vast net
that holds us with a closeness
that we’ve always craved,
for here, in Life’s embrace, I will be saved.

Your Salvation

It doesn’t depend
on your belief.
After all, you can’t decide
what you believe in,
can’t change your mind, at will,
about your trusts,
So it is not required
that you make yourself believe
in something other than you do.

It doesn’t depend
on your getting it right —
holding the right images,
doing the right rituals,
making the right choices
at the right time.

Your salvation
(your healing, your finding
your tribe and your calling)
depends on the same law
that guides the stars
and the mycorrhizae
and everything between.
It belongs to you.
You can have it.

House

This is a house of prayer
a place to center
a place to be still
a place to wield the light-lines
of being,
to stand up for the justice
that rules in favor
of who you’ve always known you are.

This is a house of yes
Come here to be affirmed
Come here to enter
the entrancing
truth-impelled entrainment
with the ever-pulsing
symphony of Life.

This house,
This temple,
This body.
All I have,
All I need.

Ark

I will make this ark
from the course of the spark
between us —
the bright cathedral beams
that form from joy
when we meet each other,
when we have come eager
for the gift, ready
to be blessed,
humble and ignited with anticipation
for the way that arch forms
when our eye lights make contact
and the arc is completed.

We soar in elation
because we are made for this
and this ark of our connection
will hold us up,
lift us gently rocking
above the heaving waves
and we’ll be safe there
until the waters ease
and set us softly
on the reconsecrated shore.

Borne Anew

In these past few days
I’ve been feeling
the mysterious lift,
the suspected disconnect,
the unexpected lightness
of sensing that my life
is being steered
by some other hand than mine

And it flies high
and it is strong
and it is tender,
And I can’t imagine
what we may achieve,
But it is bearing me
upward on the currents
of infinity

And I can only let go
of the no longer catching traction
of my feet,
and hold on
to this mighty rising power.

Shared Prayer, King County Jail

After we finished talking
(in patchwork mix of four imperfect languages)
She held my gaze
and held it
till it became a carrier wave,
and lacking words,
I let myself sink into prayer.
I sent it out across the visual tone
I found the place
where we are one
I found the power
present in the infinite,
the source we share
that nothing can assail.
She nodded understanding
as if I had been speaking.
(“Estoy orando” I said then;
I am understanding,” she replied)
and we did another round,
silent, deeper
till I felt myself changed
in the broad terrain
where we found ourselves —
knew that this was somewhere
far more solid than the stories of our lives.
I hope,” she said, in Portuspanish,
someday I can do for someone
what you have done for me.”
I’m sure,” I said in Spanish,
that you will.”

Companioned Prayer

Let me take you with me
on a prayer
Where we first plunge
into the wonder of our source —
The nature and the nurture of
the law that holds us
pouring forth the affluence of Life

Then in the insistent,
naturally occurring
alignment of our systems
with what always is,
we’ll feel the surging strengthening,
the calm and gentle ordering,
the unrestrained empowering
of everything we are —
Our hope, our worth, our destiny,
Our interwoven harmony,
The easy, brilliant artistry
written in the book of us
long before the birthing
of the stars.
