Asking for Heaven

If it is true

(and it is)
that we can have
all the good we can imagine,
The trick is to imagine it big enough:
To get a glimpse, and cherish
what it feels like
to have a good that covers every need —
That doesn’t end abruptly when the time is up
or care is spent
or we are pulled away to fill our roles
as slaves of guilt
or slaves of debt

And so I treasure each of these
Each hope, each joy
Each hunger, every yearning
For they help me frame the asking
for the promised thing —
That which, when requested,
must be given —
So I won’t settle for a grim security
because I didn’t know
to ask for heaven.

The Truth shall make you free

Truth won’t let you settle
for a paradigm that sells your soul.
Though you may plead and pray
for what you feel would be
the easy way
(just once to be allowed
to beat the odds,
to be the one who comes out
on the top)
you will not get it.

Truth delivers you
from the whole paradigm
of win and lose
of being some unworthy one
Lucky today, but waiting
for inevitable failure —
Don’t despair:
You can let go of all that pain

Truth does have its demand:
You need to know it
Need to let yourself be weaned
from all the lies about your being
Then Truth delivers you
into its essence, where you rise transcendent
Free and whole, divine, beloved, resplendent.

Sunrise

Only Love could solve that problem
And Love has — fully!
We only need to wait to see
what splendid ways
this singular dawn
will rise on our sights
What purples, pinks and oranges —
What luscious shades —
will transfigure these remaining clouds
Will make of them
spectacular offerings
Bright gifts to show us
just how glorious
Love is.

Witnessing You

No, I won’t believe
the lies of pain
the lies of isolation
Your breath comes rushing in
again and again
and each return of it
is a coursing of life, of joy,
of power, of perfection
Each step you take a miracle
of balance and coordination
smooth flowing of the genius
of creation

I won’t believe
in any gaps in my perception
any failure to see
the deep completeness
that comprises you
Your full connection
to your love
your painless, strong, exultant wholeness
that testifies to ever-present goodness
revealed amazingly
to each of us today.

Teach us to play

Spirit of wind and water
Spirit of dolphin, otter
Teach us to play
Teach us the readiness
in every moment
for swift and creative response
to each impulse offered
by each of your creatures —
The swoop that follows the drop
The twirl that follows the swoop
The delight of surprise
at our supple capacity
brought out so suddenly
brilliantly, happily
perfect precision and time

Spirit of song
Teach us to play life
like a flute, like a drum
like a cello
All our cells being
the deep sounding board
sending our praise to the sky.

For Foret

We will hold the light
We will acknowledge
What you are is ever filled by Spirit
As cupped hands catch falling water
Always full, and always, too, releasing
Refilled, in every moment, by its source
In this bright stream
no harsh insertion of a foreign object
no collision
can mar the substance of your being
No extraction, no subtraction
can reduce your essence.

So we’ll keep on seeing
your strong life
asserting still its sacred place
Still radiant, still free
Still reestablishing itself
in steady flow and unremitting grace.

Serenity

This morning when the 5:30 alarm blared,
Wrung from sleep, I noticed
that the Lord’s Prayer
was singing in my mind
And it remained there
left over from my dream
And it continued
its words and melody into my day
So I considered
How do I let myself be so centered
that every breath of Spirit moves me?
How does my agenda stay
on how the law of Truth can use me?
— I held it dear, this clear intention
let it sift and order each dimension
let the songs, kaleidoscopic, overlap
let my memory keep coming back
to that keynote: to only seek to serve.
— thus coming into evening in serenity
savoring this small taste
of eternity.

Howling

Go ahead
Stomp if you need to
Raise your fist at the sky
and scream
Swear, howl, wail
Your thoughts aren’t holding up the world
Your actions, however desperate
can’t damn you
The Love that holds you
is well able to sustain the world
and you
through this storm
whether it’s your storm
or all the world kicked up around you
whether you feel you have been bad
or feel you have been wronged
It doesn’t matter
You can rest
The Principle that turns the worlds
will keep on turning
Your drooping hopes will raise their heads
towards morning.

Holding On

Take me in

to hidden chambers
Lift the secret latches
Solve the puzzle locks
Bring me into mystery
and endow me there
What I’ve heard in silence
I will shout from mountains
It is right
that everybody hear this truth
That it begin to offer
another way of seeing
another way to be:

Spirit, I will hold you
I will cling
like an infant
to my mother
I will not let go
I’ll feel the flow
of infant love
that holds on tight with such need
in the instinct of connection
but not in desperation —
in affection

Spirit, when you fly
and the wind rushes around us
and the land
falls away beneath us
and the air grows cool
I will cling
to your warmth
I will hold on with love
and whoop
with heart-rush joy.

Bedtime Prayer

One last cocooning prayer
before I sleep
One last tuning
with that which keeps me
One last recall
of what prevents my fall
The tender cradle
that enwraps us all

The cozy blankets
and the horizontal plane
won’t, on their own
assure my peace
but my true thanks
and prayer with soft refrain
will bring me home
and set my soul at ease.
