In Common

When I release the labels,
every one of us can slip through the bars,
free as fish, smooth as silver flashes,
anything that bound us up in judgment
left behind, caught against the grate

We didn’t need those definitions  –
we can laugh in sleek joy
to find ourselves united
in the bright grace of our being
and the unity with which we move,
sharing currents and clarity,
surging onwards along our common course.

No Void

There is no condemnation
when seeing through the eyes of love,
and when there is no void
there is no fear

There is no separation
when seeing with the Mind of One,
and where there is no void
all things are clear

And as we learn to have no lens
to focus on what isn’t,
truth’s continuity fills up our sight
and leads us out of prison.

In Kinship

I give myself permission
to find myself lighter –
composed of elements
that sparkle and stream,
and mingle with the stream of
what floats in the air,
what circles and kindles tingles,
life leaping in molecules,
sending joy in rolling curves
up along the skin

I give myself permission
to be weighty, propelled by breath into
solid pushback against the floor,
finding the mountain stance
where I will not be moved

It is the same breath
in both cases, the same Spirit  –
I walk in kinship with the air and earth.

OK

It’s OK to cry,
though it may just be
circles around myself,
stories that invoke the longing
for some deeper comfort

It’s OK to cry, for all that wetness
can melt the lines, can help dissolve
what is harsh, intractable,
what is self-important,
what didn’t realize
we are all in this soup together  –
all small, all huge, all holy,
all loved and infinite,
all needed,
all able
to tune the unifying chord.

One body

If we share one body,
it must be embodiment,
must be that pressing up against the edge
that lets us move in perfect fit,
that lets us feel there’s nothing between
us and the impulse, the precise knowing
of where we are to be –
must be that satisfaction
of having been the dance itself,
of being the very art,
fully in tune

If we are one body,
we must know how we each feel,
must feel the same press within
and so innately follow
all of the intentions
and attentions, all the powering desire  –
we must know how,
within our body,
to be one.

Afternoon Nap

We’ve been here before,
in this furry intimacy,
mammalian and wordless,
where our togetherness mirrors,
then reaches, a more expansive place –
the togetherness embracing
everything alive,.holding us all
so tenderly, rejoicing in the perfect place
each of us is given
in the open secret of Life.

The Tempter

The tempter urged me to consider
alternative scenarios  –
what will you do if …?

But I will not consider them.
There is no if outside of
what we are, no condition
that puts us outside of our being

The tempter urged me
to use its timelines  –
to measure progress in terms of
things getting better

But I will not use them.
There is no getting better
than what we have always been,
there never was an incompleteness
to our essence

The tempter urged me to take a side,
made it attractive, saying
my side’s so much better

But I will not take one.
There are no sides to the infinite,
there’s no division in Oneness  –
and I’m secure in what I am
without the tempter. It has no place
nor purpose in my life.

Poem written in the dark after it was finally cool enough

Everyone is looking for places to stay cool,
and I’m feeling the wish
to write a long story,
one of missed connections
and broken threads –
lost threads seeking each other over years,
sad and tragic mismatches
that people settled for
after their dreams were lost

But all the threads of the story
are subsumed,
changed as tide pools change
when tide comes in –
things that were disconnected
become one,
things that were lost
unite on holy ground.

Journey of the Mind

I am not alone,
for in this journey of the mind,
I bring you all with me –
you who I have known a long time,
you I see in these most recent days,
you I knew before but lost contact,
you I’ve never met

I bring you all with me
because, in truth,
there’s no way I could go alone.
My mind and yours,
like one fish seen as two
in the refraction of the glass
must move together

I can’t go there alone,
for we are one,
and will rejoice together
in every glimpse of truth and beauty
all along the way.
