I will dance

I will dance because I need to
Dance because the world spins
faster than we know
Dance because the currents
call on me to throw
my coalescing self into the swirl
Dance because in dancing I will know
from the pull of the dynamic
who I am

I will dance
I will dance because it feeds me
with the rhythm of connection
and the instant-forged affection
of the spin
Dance because I learn, thus,
the elemental oneness
that summons us together from within

I will dance because this gift of dance is given
This gift of music which has been expressed
to fill us with our heritage of heaven
and let us know for sure that we are blessed.

Two for Foret

(Our friend Foret passed on yesterday evening.  This evening I took a bike ride, thinking of him, and these are the images that came forth.)

Life Affirms Itself

Life affirms itself
in brilliant blue of sky
and clouds laid out
in languid abandon
of wisps and splotches
brightness of the late sun
softening the evening

It is a time for wistful thoughts of angels
and imagining us all gathering
free, now, from all our limitations —
all the times we felt we couldn’t share —
When we can recognize each other by the essence
that before we only saw in flashes
but which, in each of us, now shines clear

Life affirms itself
in this and every yearning
and in each instinctive turning
to our Love.

For Foret: A Tribute

Rainier-sized force of gravity
on the dance floor
Packing massive passion
Centrifugal powerhouse
Roiling currents with your playful storms
Humble and hoping
Romantic troubadour
Proffering sweet flowers plucked from air
Barefoot on your minstrel cycle
Seeking out harmonics, blending song
Forging from outlandish parts and phrases
A role you owned, a place where you belonged
I offer you this evening sky, this mountain
And through awakened feet, this farewell kiss
My feet to earth, and earth to you, Foret,
May you walk on in peace, inhabit bliss.

Remembering

We walk almost in trance
Remembering
Doing things no one has taught us
Doing them because we must —
Some ancient edict
has brought us to this point
Insistent hunger drives us to the place
where we may find ourselves together
learning grace

Slowly, we pick up and wear the wisdom
Older than the schools
and the long, loud rush of words
and the frantic reasoning
intoned over and over
The words of those who would impose
a logic to their will
and make us think we need to do
the things that scatter, kill
us off, to cull the ones
who for a time can do the bidding
of a voice that doesn’t care.

But we return
Some of us, at first
Then a few more
We come in ones and twos
But we are many
And listening within
Each of us knows
this thing we need to do

So we unite
First join hands
Then learn to breathe together
Then learn to hold the space for one another,
To shine the light that magnifies each person’s gift
That brings us into peace and closes up the rift
Till we can weave our separate music into one voice
To reconstruct our primal song, and so rejoice.

Together

If we breathe together —

the whole earth —
in grand and rushing intakes,
curling into every cranny,
long, sustained releasing,
returning and returning

If we fly together
riding on the currents
and creating them
swooping, swirling, echoing each other
cushioned by the air, ecstatic, gliding

If we hum together
all the toning of our integral vibrations
finding unforeseen harmonics, deep support
joining in the long reverberation
of all we are, and all we’ve been before

Then we shall later walk enchanted
through the richness of each moment’s breath
knowing that no gesture goes unanswered
each movement met by all the ones we’re with.

In tune

To be in tune
is such a natural thing
though unacknowledged
in our benighted sphere
A thing that babies know at birth
and try with some success at first
to teach their parents

Why do we then fall into such confusion
Thinking that we’re born without a clue
and must be plied with tedious instruction
before there’s anything we know that we can do?

It opens up a yawning gap
that stretches over many weary, lonely years
of seeking satisfaction in the proffered tasks
expected failure deepening our fears
When what we really wanted
is so close to us, so simple
To listen once again to infant wisdom
To find the ancient science of connection
Ride on the waves
that make us move as one.

The calculus of need

In the old assessment
To speak of need is to confess a lack
Admitting need is weakness
And to ask for what you need
entails a sacrifice
of dignity, of power, of position —
a painful act of desperate submission

In another way of seeing
Needing is the interlock of love —
The contact that inspires our hearts
to gratitude
I need you as I need the air I breathe
Not contemplating lack
but just acknowledging
how sweetly and how deeply we’re connected
Not bound, but bonded —
in our unity perfected

Performing once again
the calculus of need
where we consider what to claim
what to concede
To leave the old assessment for the new will be
the algorithm that will set us free.

Breathwork

My breath came in and in
Like beach waves into tide pools
Flowing over rocks and into cavities
Rush of filling up the waiting places
Then
Like beach waves
It receded
Out and out, draining every crevice
Pulling seaweed back
Exposing mussels
Washing nutrients across
the tiny mouths
Again, and still again
And I remembered
Yes, we live in breathing
As with breath
So must it be
with everything I am
No isolation and no static being
To be alive, I need to flow
in constant interaction
In venture and return, interdependent
My life sustained by everyone I know.

One Tribe

We are all one tribe
Anything that says otherwise
is the old story
that we have been told
that we have believed
that we have enacted
But never
has it been true
And the dawning
of that realization
moment by moment
like sheaths slowly dropping
from flowers emerging
Will bring all the brightness forth
Colors and fragrance
and fresh interaction
Bountiful blooming
of deep satisfaction
What we have longed for
not knowing it’s possible
One tribe uniting —
Reunion of song.

The Currency of Hearts

for Leo and Magda

For those who understand
the currency of hearts
nothing else is needed
though many things can be used
A smile, a hug, an offering of food
A sympathetic tear, consoling words
The currency of hearts
affords a richness
you can’t accrue in any other way
It multiplies its treasure instantly
Fills souls with joy as sun fills up the day
It doesn’t matter what you have
How large your gift, how polished you appear
It’s not the gift that makes you rich
But that you honored
your own heart’s desire
to share.

Time In

Let me give you a “time in” —
A time of contact,
of enough cuddle
to be an answer to your lost cries
A time in
Like time before time
when everyone knew
what to do about cries
that cry meant cuddle me
Bring me in
Let me know home
Oh yes
Now is the time
for time in
for everyone:
The hothead
The curmudgeon
The one who cringes inside his shell
darting in alarm at each approach
The one who sits alone
The one who sits with all her so-called friends
hiding isolation under loud words
The ones who make their dogged resolutions
with no idea what would earn the in ticket
The ones who hide their keening under sharp motion
The ones who try all day but can’t fix it
Oh World!
Let us give each other time in
Let us come home to connection
until we have the circuits to unite
in tender understanding and affection.
