Pool

I will not be tired or sad or scared,
I will notice
what your face is doing.
I won’t try to deconstruct your mood
but I will be here
watching for your light

If I can be a pool
to give reflection
and maybe some refreshment,
I will be there —
if you venture near
then maybe you will find me

And if not,
wind may still ruffle
the light across my waters,
trees may still rustle
above the quiet shore,
your life still follow
the course that has been charted
and I’ll still hold you
gently in my heart.

Spaces

A big part of us
is the space we make for others,
the shape of them
we hold in our hearts,
large enough to encompass
all their potential,
cozy enough to hold them close

We enlarge ourselves
the more we understand —
the more of others we take in
and hold dear.
We become what we love
and so we love what we become.

Foundation

To dream deep
and wake up happy —
this is the gift I’d give you
if I could — give it to you
every day, let whatever faces you
be met by this foundation

So you can then receive
the countless other gifts
bestowed in every breath,
in every smile, in every challenge,
so you lie down in peace
and dream again.

One Man

One man knows he is loved —
how does that make him feel
as he walks on the gravel road
or the sun-touched banks of the river?

One man knows he is loved —
what difference can that make?
— All the difference to him
as he walks the paths of his life

How can he know he is loved?
That is the ponderous question,
but what’s clear is that, once he knows it,
the world rests serene in his hand.

Phase Shift

We have names for so many things
we won’t need names for later —
they will be released from thought
in a soft shifting, dissolved in parallax
like gaps between the trees

We will walk then
in a new positivity
where love is substance, essence,
and identity

There will be new names
and things we’ll see so clearly
which, up to then, had seemed
mere speculation

It will be easy, then,
to walk in full awareness
and to wield our power
precise and pure and fruitful
as we truly are.

Unconditional

I sense that I have barely comprehended
the size of unconditional
and what it means
to be companioned in that vastness,
comforted at every step

And how it is that there’s no far away
in everpresence, no departure
from here. Space without distance,
development with no constraint of time,
nothing locked away by past or future,
everything at hand in earth and heaven.

That of Which We Speak

We speak with utmost confidence
of something we can all feel,
and though it could be argued
that we can’t see it — here it is

For we can all see the light of love,
how it makes us able
to wrap each other snuggly
in the warmth of eyes,
communicate our approbation
in one look, strengthen each other
like that, even before we say anything

That’s where our words come from, then —
not the voice of theory or belief,
a voicing, rather, of what is.

These moments

These moments, these dream moments,
are given to love, the kaleidoscopic
ever-brilliant unfolding
of renewed patterns
of care, of blessing,
of being there
in the blooming
of unexpected mutual delight

These moments, these waking moments,
are the same, the landscape
in which they emerge
as malleable as those in dream,
past, present, future
sliding into meek alignment
with Love’s imperative.

Touch me — a prayer

Touch me with your spirit,
touch me until I am lit up
to the point of discovering
I am all light
and my rays
are all yours
and my desire
all comes from what you are,
what you impart

Touch me so I feel recognized
from the inside out
so I know
there is nothing of me
that you don’t know,
nothing you don’t love,
and the lift I feel
all along my form
is just me touching in
to what you have held for me,
what you have held me as,
how you have beheld me,
all my days.

Helmsman

I see you there
steering your ship
behind eyes that you feel
not quite tall enough
to see out of,
reaching for the controls,
confused about which one does what
and how much force to apply —
I see your bravado, and
maybe a few of your other veils

Don’t worry — we all feel that way
at least some of the time.
I know we all want
the same thing —
Here — have a little gentle laughter,
the kind that tells you
you’re eternally accepted, the kind
that lets you know
you belong here forever
in the home-free tumble-fest of life.
