Open

I want to find that box again
and see if I can open it –
the light that came out
was yellow and orange,
and the warmth of it indescribable

I found it in a small place
tucked deep within  – it was unpretentious,
it had a secret latch
and I opened it almost not on purpose

And the light bathed everything
in its wondrous glow,
and illumined a space so large
that there was room for all of us
to stretch into our true being
and inhabit the full size
of our innocence
and our dominion
and our duty and our power
to heal the earth.

6:30 to 7 AM

Today I was up early enough to learn
that here in the valley,
though the sun still rises in the east,
it pours in from the north,
trees along the western edge
lighting up, starting from the top,
striated rays sifting  between  branches,
the line of light touching the valley floor
before the sun crests the eastern hill

I watched the sunlight kiss the crown
of the oak tree, watched as the distant pines
received their light in turn,
like an anointing,
watched the hill’s shadow recede,
slowly, then suddenly,
as the sun claimed its reign
and brought the day.

Illumination

Love illumines you.
Understand this:
follow the pulse of your being
all the way down
to what wants to be  –
what wants to be seen,
what wants to be known,
what hungers to find its expression

Love illumines you
way down to the core –
love is what courses
underneath everything,
spurring your very existence

Love illumines you
from the inside,
the only light you can see by,
the light by which you are seen –
look how it shines you up
right through whatever else
you may have thought had to be

Look how it shows you are
everything that you are,
right through what others might see,
right to the place you are free.

Adventure

In the adventure of immortality,
I leave behind the currency
in which I used to deal

Instead of tokens,
the true object of desire,
instead of rules for the exchange,
a clarifying harmony

Yes, it impels me to be still,
for how, otherwise, would I take in
this light? – that settles
everywhere around me

How else would I follow
the infinite dendritic reach?
– always inward, always where it nourishes
the deepest recognition of identity,
and cherishes
every thought its touch impels to rise.

Light Bearing

It’s not about being right,
it’s not about winning

The omni-directionality
of the converging chorus
overcomes, with its sheer beauty,
any operatic sense

For you’ll find
you’d rather be part of it
than be exalted on your own  –
you’d rather be an unnamed conduit
of this transforming light
than to be spotlighted,
called out as a star

You’d rather know
someone went home
feeling filled with brightness
and shared it with their family
and they all felt
delighted in and blessed

You’d rather know
this light is the current
that keeps everything going,
just as it always has
and always will.

Like Water

We find we are like water  –
come amorphous to the morning,
to the moment when  the light hits
and we array ourselves in shine

Before then, of course,
there is much movement  –
we rise to meet the air, we drift,
we kiss the edges of the things we know,
we make fog, we roll, we lift
we curl up small and tumble down

All this to know ourselves
in how we let the light be seen,
all this to show our essence
in how we meet the dawn.

Sounding

I start to feel the deep dark pools
whose surfaces may shift,
may show or hide
the fathoms underneath

The season’s lights reveal them –
they glint with their reflection,
they multiply the brightness,
illuminating memories

We’ll have no Christmas lights
this year, not even candles  –
the lights that shine for me
will be the deep internal ones,
the ones made brighter
as they plumb the darkness,
the ones that walk with us
along our solitary path,

Illuminated

The light catches us
in moments we didn’t pose for,
renders us radiant
in the midst of daily efforts
we thought we were just
trying to get through

But actually it’s showing us
what we are –
made of brilliance,
of spontaneous
glory and grace,
just like everything
we share this earth with,
finding home within the power of place.
