Stardom

The sun came out at six pm
Grand, sporting brilliant blue sky
And a few gratuitous fluffy clouds
A fine entrance
escorted by strong winds officiously
brushing away the excess warmth
But it was charming enough
to warm us anyway
Make us sit and bask
if only for a moment

It is a busy star
with many others it must see
We can’t expect its glow to last for very long
and so we try not to depend on it
try not to hang on its every gesture
But face it
We are smitten
We will pine for it tomorrow
if it’s gone.

What you can take with you

Arms spread wide, radiant face
Laughing, twirling, diving
Pulled by the music, impelled by grace
Moving at one with it, holding
true to the moment
the point of perfection
Filled up, filled out and fulfilled
in the joy of it
Never more sure of your essence, you dance
into your primal divinity
being this you for the very first time
the you that has been you forever

Afterwards, sitting alone
in the tingle and glow
that is all your cells’ memory
This is a truth you can own
Beauty has danced in you
full and enhanced by you
so now it won’t let you go
You’ll carry this mark in you
Love giving spark in you
Whoever sees it will know
This is the treasure you don’t hide away
the gift you will bring to each day.

Light Maintenance and Rescue Work

I will be there for you
for I need
the bright gold liquid currents
made of truth and confidences
that flow between us when the channel’s open
I will tend that channel
since it’s such a source of life
nourishing, illuminating
me and you

Yesterday I saw a stoppage
Saw my light
rolling off you and not going in
Saw the block of burden
and the hooded sadness
and the drifting starting up, the downward spin
So I reached out — no
I would not let you go there
Would not let you feel I didn’t
need your light
Or that I wouldn’t stop everything
Everything else
to get the channel flowing free again

Thank you for responding
Thank you for receiving my insistent light
For coming here to where the current
can continue bright
Thank you for reaching back in trust
For we both know
it rescued both of us.

Inner Lights

These lights shine independent
of our hooded fears,
our darting doubts
that cover them like wind-whipped cloaks
to make them seem to blink and waver
or our yearning plea that they be validated
as if to make them shine they must be seen

These lights we fight for,
strive, with all our rough-made tools
to protect
and strive, through strict regimes
to make more bright
Shine on their own.

Nothing we can do can stop their shining
Nothing we can do makes them appear
But still their beacon calls across the night
Their signal constant, radiant and clear.

Legacy

for me and you, and for our parents

You don’t need to be sorry
about your legacy
You needn’t doubt
the impartation of your gifts
These things have never stood
on your performance, your success or failure

Sure as the stars
The light of your being
has sent its beams
and the continuity
of your essence
still streams
steadfast across light years
timeless and unchanged

Whatever gifts you tried to package
Tried, with fumbling hands
to deliver to your children
Whatever they have said
or misconstrued
or failed to see
Your light has always shone on, true

And always shone, as pure
in their bright being
Nothing you have done
could dim it
Nothing you didn’t do
could ever let it fail

It’s what you are
that blesses them
that always has —
Not something you determined —
Something that was given you
before the world began
as it was given them
Rest easy
for your love
has ever been enough.

Holding light, holding tight

My halo clasp

tender circle ‘round your aura
invokes my care
my longing to protect you
hold you dear
make you know how deeply
you are loved

My tight grasp
invokes my infant instinct
to hold on, hold on tight
to feel your care
to be loved
to trust that you are there
I hold on never wanting to let go
as if I’ll never get enough
I need it so

Your tight grasp
invokes my mother-love
makes me want to hold you up forever
Your light clasp
gives me buoyancy and wings
and sweet permission
to fill myself with light
and let my heart pursue its mission.
Light and tight, each in its proper hour
Each hold has its purpose and its power.

At a roadside stand

You can weave rainbows
into your work
its beauty
and yours
will shine as reflections
of each other
You can weave quetzals
and flowers
in the tradition of your grandmother
but with your own flair
hidden there
in that dark and crowded stall
hung so thickly
with tapestries
in impossibly bright colors
we entered to look
and you appeared shyly
third person we’d seen
emerge from the shadow
You said, “You like? This my work.”
You and your weaving
lit up that place
so now we have
one of your rainbows
and, reflected, the memory
of your charming smile.

Monday, downtown

Monday Downtown (background music: Isaac Shepard “Before Dawn”)

Oh, humanity!
Working at your tired charades
Moving through so many empty boxes
Desiccated corridors
Courses without meaning

Look how amazing you are!
Look how, even when the rules are cast
to close out any purpose, light or joy
You still find ways to shine:
Within this skewed account of life
your light slips through the chinks
and though at times refracted
blazes forth
Makes us maybe take a while to notice
all the places where it is suppressed
Just think: if we were free
what brilliance we would show

It is our destiny
We will prevail
We will shine clear
We’ll banish all the false demands
The failed array of hoops, constrictive bands
Deny the faulty purposes
that disappointed us
Swing free
on the strength of our unstoppable
creative rush!

Moon Lullaby

Lay my head on moon-touched clouds
Suffuse my sleep with moonbeams
Let their coolness flow along my breath
Their sweetness reaching deep into my dreams
So permeating, let its light refresh
with gentle steadfastness
my halting meditation
Bring to me the comprehensive rest
that stills my heart’s incessant perturbations
Hold me in your light
till morning’s wings arise
to bear me into day’s resplendent skies.

Weight and Lightness

Nothing in this world —
Nothing —
Not houses, not credentials
Not webs of friendship —
Has any strength to hold
the steady falling of the heart

They break like spider silk
against its weight
And it will fall right through
until it feels
the centered force of its own gravity
Until it slows
in thoughtful drift
and feels the atmosphere that gathers
meditatively
around its presence

Everything in this world —
Everything —
Each sense of home, each memory
Each smile exchanged —
Has grace to hold
the precious light that shines upon it

Grace to catch that light
and shine it forth
and be illuminated
Light that has no weight
That sits so brightly
on each snow crystal, each
hair of thistle down, each poised hope
that meekly lifts itself
into its own being.
