Praxis

Sing, people!
Stretch, meditate,
Pray, make love, dance —
Fly to the thing that brings you light!
Seek out friends to laugh, to rant,
Climb mountains, find wild rivers —
Whatever will expand, restore you,
rush through you, ignite, fulfill you.
Give it enough time
to refresh your luminescence,
For when, in my usual ways,
I can’t find mine,
I can then turn to you
and be lifted.

Entering

Bring nothing with you,
for everything you need
is in your power to see what’s here

And there’s a lightness in knowing
every moment has, within it,
deep wells of richness,
plenty for your present thriving

And there’s no lack
of the substance in yourself
that calls forth that dark glow —
the subterranean shining
that quenches every thirst.

Love speaks like this

Wait just a moment
And you can feel the love flow in
Like water on the tidal shore
seeps through the sand
melting the footprints

Let the impressions all grow wide and bright
and shimmery
While the answering rush of warmth
wells up in you
This, too, will shine —
Flash out its signal
Far across the water
to the other side.

Tricks of the Light

It seems we are
so refracted from ourselves
That we don’t recognize these lights
as having anything to do with us,
So attracted to what seems
so out of reach
That we can’t trace
the inner spark from which they radiate.

These tricks with mirrors
make us feel alone
Closed off by glass
Confused by all the faces
that gaze back at us,
looking all the same —
Faces that wear all our fears, projected,
All asking something of us
that we can’t quite name

But all these lights are ours
And they reflect our center
And all these lights are us:
Through our own core
we enter
the place where we can soothe
all these eyes
Allay these doubts and fears
And let these facets
magnify the One.

Homecoming: a vision

She makes her way along familiar streets
now rendered narrow
by the broadness of her vision.
Her light-filled eyes
scan these scenes
of her recent past
which tug up tears she scarcely understands.

Her skirt snags on corners;
She tries to pull it in;
It keeps on spilling outward
Like her love,
Like her tears.
She wants to gather all these up;
She wants them to come with her,
Wants them to see her.

They are afraid
that they have lost her,
that she won’t stay home,
that in her brilliance
she has no time to see them.

She will find a way to bring them in
She will be patient
She’ll come up from behind,
Shine through them softly
So the light they see is theirs
Rising from within
to meet her own.

Portal Vision

I went through the portal
And now everything is different
Or maybe nothing has changed at all.

*
I see the vision
in the corner of my mind
And I can only approach it
if I treat it like a wild deer —
Don’t look straight at it,
Don’t move too fast,
Pretend to browse for food,
Go forward slowly, sideways,
Not with my attacking feet or teeth
but leading with my vulnerable side.

It isn’t a wild deer —
It won’t bolt.
But there’s something about the focus
That won’t hold if I look straight at it.
It wants to come around me softly
And warm me from behind like sunshine —
Strong heat on the back of my ear, my shoulder
Melting my resistance.
It wants to glow behind me
And light up my path ahead,
Make a long shadow of me
to send before me like a scout.
It wants me to have this light
But always know
It doesn’t come from me.

Parabolic Mirror

If love occurs in micro-moments,
Then it’s occurring
at this moment
as I lie here breathing you
while you are sleeping —
Feeling, in the rise and fall,
the intimacy of breath
and the warm firmness of your form.

If love occurs
in micro-moments of connection,
Consider this:
The whole parabola of my mind —
my memory, my current celebration,
my hope, my dearly felt anticipation
Will magnify this tiny spark
Displaying beacon lights across the sky.

And this moment
feeds a limpid pool
of many others —
All of them magnified,
All of them bringing light,
Lifting us in the divine,
Teaching us love as they shine.

A Vision

In the vision
I was mother,
and from my outstretched arms
flowed liquid light.
And many came to drink,
And I was Mother,
Held steady as the conduit
of love
that those who drank
evoked in me.

Coursing mother-love
circled in a circuit
Filling me with joy,
with joy and fierce protection,
Joy and wonder.
And as I watched
One and another
filled with light.
They rose like stars;
We greeted each other as equals,
And they turned outward,
Conducting light,
Moving to serve it
as they each were called.

Turning

In these times when light is mostly shrouded
(rain and fog and thick, low-lurking clouds)
We see no change, no movement of the seasons
No shadows marking progress on the dial

Till, on a day like this
Where some incalculable hand
has parted all the shrouds, so we can see
the sun, serene, in clear, surreal cerulean
And every limb, love-touched, in basking gleam

And know our land is turning toward the springtime
Her face receiving now, in every day
A bit more light, more ease,
More time to stretch out
In life-embracing welcome
Warm against the longer glowing sky.

Saturday Morning, Third Place Books

I watch you, my neighbors,
most unknown to me —
watch your lights rise up.
You come here for your joys,
for your reunions,
in your free time, for your friends
and for your hobbies

And as you walk
your bodies
show the many twists
the light needed to make
coming up through the burdens,
the rejections,
through the sense of failure
and the strategies you’ve used,
the resolutions, the regimes,
the marks which, though I can’t decipher them
hint of a tale
recounting why your light came forth
in this particular way.

And if you are like me,
You likely think
your story is invisible
And maybe you are right
For maybe, in the end
All these burdens will dissolve
And all of us will walk here unencumbered
by all the weights our bodies now betray

And we will see each other
as we now, in our best moments
see the ones we love:
Redeemed by light,
Brave and shining through their day.
