And, too …

(Moments, 2nd iteration)

Where there has been euphoria  –
light whipped like blond curls
triumphant in the wind,
sailing down the sound,
light pooled like coals
in the aftermath of dance,
light felt as heat
in the warm coursing deep within –

These moments have been places
where the veil was somehow rendered
more transparent –
where a faint gleam of true essence
has wakened me, if only slightly,
to what is present always,
and I think it’s fine
to seek, in each moment,
the place of thinning
where the eternal light
floods into view.

Moments

(from the virtual biking philosopher’s virtual notebook)

Well, you’re right  – no moment
is inherently more fraught
or more luminous
than another. Each one contains
things for us to notice, or not. Each can be
a portal – to memory, to comprehension.
Each has its own singular shine
in right here and now

Even the times of tears, of dark waters,
have their luminosity. Even the direst strait
has its laughter. And it’s not like you can shop for moments,  online or at a store –
you can’t choose out your bargain moment,
or pay with many for one of great price

The afternoon sun sifts under the trees
and sets the moss aglow. The wind
pauses and starts up again. Many birds
proclaim the brightness of their busy lives.
Each moment bears witness.

Owning it

Much is said, by many,
about the best way to live one’s life,
and I find myself,  with something
less than a thought,
releasing what opinions
I may have had
about that
and thinking,
Is not every life
destined to find its perfect resolution?
Is not every life
its own singular path?

Then how can anyone
standing outside of it
say the way a life should go?
And how can anyone live a life
without owning it?

Fall Line

Certain moments I think
I can see the whole field
of what we call our lives,
can see the grand gears
turning the mechanism,
can see the choices,
so many fall lines
down and branching down
along the watershed

But see the way the vision changed  –
none of these choices, finally,
have made us what we are,
no mechanism
has been grinding out our lives

And how we branch, and fall, and tumble,
though it may seem to divide,
will bring us, all together,
to our source.

Our

In many moments
that are like light between the trees,
that are like colors
across the evening sky,
I see my life is so much more
than what I thought

It can’t be limited by space or time –
it spills out of the sides
of any constructs, it stretches out
in comprehension
of something bigger than the realm of stars –
as comprehensive, finally, as “our”,
as big as hope, enduring as desire.

Lesson

And if I need a daily lesson
in the lifting of the fog,
in the endlessness of beauty,
in the nature of the Life
that powers each of us,
Look – it is here

And I don’t mind whatever work I need to do
to hold in thought the brilliance,
and also see how gently
the lesson is delivered –
the layers of light and layers of enlightenment,
just what I need,
just what I need today.

That Which Rises Up

We rise up, as does everything,
with wonder and gratitude
into the fact of being,
the rich Spirit that impels us
to grow, create, connect

We rise up because we must –
it is our milk, our joy,
it is our purpose

This is the substance of which we are made –
it is always with us,
and we are always with it –
splash of brilliance
that overcomes the heat,
flash of radiance
that lights our way.

Breath of Life

The perfect fitting of things
is not mechanical,
though we may observe
the intricate meshings,
though we may think
it’s a fragile webbing –
one strand misplaced
and all could fall away,
one beat missed
and everything could crash

But it can’t, it won’t.
It’s not mechanical.
No one thing depends upon another,
though it seems to.
This is the breath of Life,
everything moving in one Spirit,
each one bound
in deepest love,
directly to its cause.

Love Life?

Can love be a choice?
Here I am, living my life every day –
Can I choose to love it?
Certainly the calls of birds
elicit a response of joy,
as can the feeling that the day’s just right
for plants to grow. And the exquisite mouths
of wild iris before they unfurl,
and laughter, and the kindness
I can find in eyes

These things show me my love of life
before I even make a choice,
so if I choose it consciously,
what then?

Before all that

Today I think of presence
not as something with me,
but as the very fact of my existence

Wonder it is that I see,
that I breathe, and that I have,
before all that, the great desire of being,
the hope, the love, all that waits
before the me I call myself arises
to greet the morning – all that cares so deeply
about something before what I define
as daily life –

I call it presence.
I step back into it
and go out with peace.
