Unexpected Glory

Things can be more beautiful
than you thought – seams can crack open,
unimagined light can pour through
at any part of your life –
things you’ve tended, especially,
but also what you’ve forgotten,
or what is given you
from the kindness of others
(from what they’ve tended
or maybe what they unexpectedly found)

Life can be more beautiful
than the dogged portion you’ve allowed yourself,
or the comfort that you’ve settled for,
the compromise, the resignation

Anybody’s life can open up
in unexpected glory,
bringing blessing to themselves
and many others

Your life can be
the light you hoped for it –
ask and seek, and seek and ask –
it will come forth.

Full

The fullness of the air,
the day, the night, the rain –
no place for emptiness  –
not here, not anywhere

The energy of caring
and the fact of everything
insistent in its being
are here, right here

Once you know it
you will never feel alone,
or if you do, you can be still,
and reach out with your longing
and your hope

It will fill in all around you
like a song,
it will light up
and make you holy
like a prayer.

The song that I am

I’m called now to notice
the kindness with which
the line of my life has been laid down,
the patience with me in the places
where I let fear and arrogance
cast me indelible
to colors and lines I was offered

How I’ve been given, each time,
another opportunity
to receive the opening
that will render me more alive, more true,
to my intended being. Look,
this isn’t a finite page, a finite play,
this isn’t a chance I could miss

This is the infinite,
this is its song of me,
these are the colors, the lines and the light,
this is the life that is steadily given me,
this is the song that I am.

The goodness of life

The goodness of life
can’t be extracted from the moment,
can’t be packaged as a supplement
to take later, or to take
without having noticed
the textures and tremolos,
the subtle but definite
order of everything,
without comprehending
the depth and constancy
of your belonging
and what it means

The goodness of life
requires you.

The fruit of the Spirit

Slowly we start to learn
that we are sustained,
not by the things we produce,
but by the engagement
of our hands, the grasp
of our minds, the tenacity
with which we hold on
to the flowing life source –
the attention we pour in,
giving ourselves to the curiosity,
the work, the play, the follow through
that brings these things to light.

Saturday night

Saturday night and we crashed out
after our swim, before your supper
(but not before mine)
and didn’t get up
till I had to get lanterns
to see to prepare your meal

Saturday night after the wind
blew the bank of clouds in,
trees dropping needles,
lifting their limbs,
sending the rush of the wind wave
like stories through their throng,
standing still afterwards,
drifting towards darkness

Saturday night and you thought
you might like
some people to talk to,
some night life to see
but the life of the night here
is coolness and crickets
and what we can find in our dreams.

Empowerment

If we understood our power,
every one of us,
we’d know that all of us are rich
and any one of us
can bring in the divinity of peace
the game-arresting concord of divinity

If we understood our power,
we’d know that none of us
can be impoverished,
for nothing can be taken
from our wholeness,
and nothing can deprive us
of our sovereignty

If we understood our power,
life would flow abundantly
at our hands, lush gardens
would spring forth
and be inhabited,
and every living thing we thought was lost
will find its way back
to flourish and bask in our grace.

We will rise up and build

This is not the end,
nor is it the beginning

It is neither a race
nor a time of foot dragging

It is both urgent
and commanding utmost calm,
the work of now
and of a lifetime

We are not moving in a plane
where we are judged by or compared with others,
this is our own imperative
so we will rise and do it.

The Old Maple

This is proof
that there is no arc of death,
that death is not a place
where life ends up

This is proof that life
is always what’s here to notice  –
that in spite of death sentences,
life is what speaks to us

Before, it seems, all we could notice
was that the tree was dying,
but now, each spring, each year,
we celebrate persistent life –
these leaves, as fresh as ever,
coming out gracious
beside the hollowing trunk.

In Essence

We are thoughts of the infinite Mind,
we are loves of the infinite Love,
we are. verbs in the motion of Spirit,
we are joys in the shining of Soul

There is no way to fall from approval –
we can’t be forgotten or dropped,
since our being is integral
to that which holds us,
the Life that can never be stopped.
