Infinite Permission

The One who made you
never said
Only take a little love
a polite small serving
(being sure to leave plenty
for everyone else)

The One who made you
never said
Just show a little of yourself
not enough so anyone has to notice
(don’t be a spectacle)

The One who made you
gives you infinite permission
to take all the love
you possibly can
(for in taking love, you multiply it)

The One who made you
gives you infinite permission
to shine forth everything you are
(for otherwise,
Why would you have been made?)

Infinite Comfort

What rescues you
when you are smothered under
the sense of being thought of as a number? —
the numbing nothingness of being counted,
accounted for,
packaged and dispatched,
your measure taken,
assessed, dismissed
and so forsaken?

Any act of life can rescue you
and anyone or any living thing can do it
The scent of petals, kissed by warming wind
A smile unweighed, uncalculated, treasured
Or seeing someone needs you as a friend
A gift of time untallied and unmeasured
Whatever focuses on what is infinite
will make a place for you
and bring you into it.

(background music: Isaac Shepard “A Fond Farewell”)

Whether or not you already know:

I love you.
These are powerful words
Not to be said lightly
They have consequences

The man I spoke with yesterday said
People have no idea what love is
They have no point of reference
They say “I love you, I love you,”
But they just want
To be nurtured, to be supported, to be accepted
They will leave when their need changes.

I know what love is
And I love you
I’m not saying it lightly
These words have consequences
And I know what they are

I hold you in my heart
Yes, I nurture you
Yes, I support you
Yes, I accept you
And I welcome your infinity.

I love you, and so
I willingly enter
The space where our boundaries dissolve
And we float, weightless and unformed
So at the impulse from the infinite
We can respond as one.

Unhooking

To fly free
you must release yourself
from every hook

The meat hooks
that strung you up in helpless fear,
that said you were unworthy
or somehow flawed —
that what you’re good for
hung on what the judge decreed,
or what somebody else would pay

The fish hooks
where you took the bait
of acquisition
self improvement
hot pursuit of things to make you more OK

The cockleburs
all the little irritations
where you thought if things were only different
you could make your way

Each release will be a healing
Each closed wound will bring you strength
and let your spirit range a little further
coming back with joy
to urge you to continue
to claim your stature of infinity.

The worth of a life

What is the worth of a life?
Is there a metric for this?
Consider the sun on the water
The sparkling path
which always presents itself
right where you are:
Each sparkle is for you—
the meeting of light with your eyes—
Though others see sparkles too,
they aren’t the same ones that you view.

What is the worth of a life?
As if you could separate
One life from all others—
From the sun’s sparkles, isolate one
Take it away from the sun . . .
What is the worth of a life?
There is no measure for this
No way the question can make any sense
It’s worth everything that there is.

Beam me up . . .

The place beneath my breath today
is full of lights
Brilliant as pointillist dots
that seethe and swarm and dance
and form a scene
too close for me to see
But when we sit together
Lights reflecting lights
and multiplying
Then the scene appears
So clearly scrying
That which lifts us up
and sets us flying
out beyond old limits, fear defying

So many lights! Lighter than air
Light enough to lift a whole dream
into lucidity, light enough to stream
through solar systems
Light enough to beam us
Beatific
Pulsing clear and true
across the night.

A Mystery

Embracing you today, I felt
the tingle of the timeless touch of stars
that wheel in galaxies
across the fractal spheres of space
And send waves of awareness to each other
A steady, stretched out dance
that celebrates the universe

So we connect
And constellations of our touch
The sudden places of awareness
Burst like starlight
in the space
of our perception
Dark gaps between the sparks
whoosh by like worlds —
What are we, anyway?

I see us each as some bright galaxy
Lit up by love
Attracted by a force we give no name
Held in its tender harmonies
While wide we rove
Connected still
through time and space the same.

Romance

I took a cautious step
beyond the edge
I didn’t fall
I took another, checked my feet
They still stood strong
I jumped, I leaped
and next I’ll fly
For nothing is forbidden anymore

I made a world
I made it in my mind
I gave the sky a magic, stained glass blue
I used high clouds to mark its great expanse
I made a window into it for you
If you will join me
we can let our feet
be coated in the sun-warmed sand
and climb the driftwood, where it leans
above the rising tides
and revel in life’s interlocking, overlapping swirls
the waves, the wood, the sky
the shifting windows into worlds . . .
I won’t believe a voice that says
my life course is constrained
To me belongs my mind
and all the pathways it contains.

Perspective

The truth endures in geologic time
Where stones, in their inexorable leisure
Form and re-form,
Sifting, vaulting, melting,
Crystalize in metamorphic treasure
And all the impositions on our days
The despotism, lies, and power plays
Are nothing – have no weight
And own no time
And can’t establish anything that stays.
What though their dark impress has pulsed
through generations,
dampening their light?
The voice of truth is not reversed
and so it dawns
on every sight.
These dreams will prove
ephemeral, irrelevant
Our waking rocklike, pure
eternal
Heaven-sent.

Folding: Three Figures

I
Some origami masters
fold in dim light
Perhaps this helps the forms
engage imagination’s flight
Perhaps it sensitizes
their fingers and their thumbs
Engendering precision
that only comes
with the closest of attention
with the time it takes
to sense the folds
against the darkness
of the room.

II
You asked me for some feedback
I said, just that it was perfect
That appraisal can apply again today:
That everything you brought —
Your gifts, your insecurities —
Were just what was needed
As must be
(The law that governs this
being impeccably precise)
No thing you bring
is ever out of place
It flows in oneness
in the dance of grace.

III
I’m taking time
to let you grow
to let me heal
to smooth the flow
until the shift across the fold of time
will, in its time, reveal
the form once hidden
in the implicate—
unfold it splendid
in its primal state
where all potential stands, realized and steady
where all that is to be is there already.
