Seeking

We are attracted
to the ancient woods
and to the ancient books
and to the words
that taste like stardust
timeless and mysterious

We are looking
for deep roots
and runes of truth
and something to remind us
of the way home

So long lost
in the ephemera of thinking
we are made of whim
of dust —
pawns in a creation not our own —
We seek the gravitation
that weights our essence
focuses our thrust

We keep on turning to it
Try to be still enough
to feel its pull upon us
to feel it guiding us
We keep on asking for it
We give it all our trust
We will surrender to it
because we must.

The realm of light

Though I have thought myself
A small puddle
Look how much sky
I reflect
See these deep-limbed trees
Reaching, now naked, into subtle blue
Dance of their branches weaving
Towards those distant clouds

Such a little patch of water
But how much brightness
Has found itself in me!
And if you look in sideways
You’ll see the scene extended
beyond my edge —
Some vast inverted underworld
Suspended and inviting —
Another kingdom
In the realm of light.

Mirrors

I think your soul is beautiful
because you mirror me
I see myself seen in your eyes
and what I see you see is beautiful

I see your soul as beautiful
and can’t believe
the things you say about the dark inside
since they don’t match the light I see
when I see you see me

You think my soul is beautiful
Not for my native talents
Not for my hard-earned insights
Not for my steady tending, through the darkness
of my inner flame
But for the way I saw you beautiful
when you saw me
when I felt you knew my inner name.

Seeing each other

We come here in our chosen roles
Whatever we’ve decided to present —
The selves that we’ve assembled to display,
The stories propping up our self-esteem,
Our plans of how we’ll move and what we’ll say

We come here hoping
what we’ve made ourselves to be
will be enough
And that some transformation
will reach us through our tedium of stuff
We seek a blessing
while doubting it is something we deserve
We keep on guessing
what course will make us feel alive, secure

But Ah —
Despite ourselves
(and everything we hoped to hide,
so clearly seen by everyone who’s hiding)
Our precious souls shine through
And these
These souls, so holy
So wholly free from all regimes
that we or others have devised —
Since they are here
There’s nothing else remaining.
Like dust, like ash, like smoke
those old self-constructs blow away
And so we see each other as we are.

I Am

If indeed I am a galaxy
in this broad space
My care embraces much —
Planets in their orbits
and the dance of stars
and all their swirling movement
ordered by the law
unerring and eternal
of I Am

I Am speaks in calm and potent clarity
Nothing moves outside its present current
Everything within it wheels
in sparkling and majestic power
Everything is cared for and is held

Its course projecting outward
Its harmony unchallenged
The waves of pulsing energy
defining its domain

And I need never think
that I am weak, inconsequential
A pawn in chess games
moved by meaty hands
For if I am a galaxy
My center spins out worlds
that fill the grand design
this truth demands.

Vision Prayer

Spirit, today
You can have my eyes
Hold them holy
Guide the light they gather
Give them focus
Let them synthesize
the clear truth you display
Let them harmonize
the elements of your day
Let me empathize
with everyone I see
So that I understand
your comprehensive ownership of me
The way your grace illumines
everything I know,
all that I am.

Being You

This is such a simple thing
No pressure to perform
No criteria to meet
No selective judgement
Nothing that you need to measure up to
No one to be measured up against
No grade, no quota, no one better than
the simple act of being who you are

No voices, from outside or from within
can coach you to the center of your being
But all your yearnings lead you there at last
The place you can look out from, clearly seeing

Your truth delivers you
Gives you the lens to find
The simple core of home, the clarity
that frees your mind.

Sovereign

Be alert but not afraid:
The wily lies with their insinuations
that try to catch you in the snare
of sorrow, slavery, and tiresome machinations
cannot intrude upon your power

As long as you are clear that you are free
and let no contradiction sit within
then nothing from outside of you can squelch you:
Like sprouts that break the concrete,
you will win

You will stay sovereign
when you know
there’s nothing that can undermine your soul
and since the heart of you is ever whole
no lie of brokenness can take control

Be alert but not afraid
for in the love with which you’re made
you can resist each lie that says
you’re any less than you.

The love that you are

The love that you are
exists independent of anything —
of circumstances, of conditions
of approval, recognition
or of prowess, erudition
or credentials, or permission

The love that you are
floats inside
in silent singing jubilation —
unexpected gratitude
that flows in constant circles
through your being,
bubbles up
like ancient water springs
quenches all your thirst for being seen
and known as worthy

The love that I am
sees this, thanks you —
you and the love that you are.
