Fundamental frequency

Let me sink
into this hammock
This cocoon
This softly swaying place
Where my weight is cradled
by the kindness
of the force that holds me here

Let me swing
in the fundamental frequency
of that which breathes the cosmos
Singing me
as it sings the stars
Lullaby of motion

Let me fall
gently to my center
where the quiet pulsing hope
remains connected
to the universal light
and hums the harmony
of that great song
that carries me in sweetness
through the night.

Releasing Light

In the enslavement
to which we’re bound
(held down by loops of thought
cleverly designed to make us think
they are our own)
We’re trained we’re only due a little light —
Strings of little lights at Christmas
Rare and hard-earned smiles, short vacations
A glimmering of satisfaction
coming up through layers and layers
of drudgery
Only one love in life
and no more loved ones
than we can count on a hand or two.

Why not throw off the loops?
Why not abandon
the voice that says
“How dare you? How dare you think
that you could have some more?
Why not claim
for ourselves and everyone else
all the light —
All the light that we are!

Course correction

It’s OK
There’s more truth
in those three hugs
and their memories
than in all the dread
attempting to array itself
against your coming day
There’s more truth
in those strong smiles
than in the sense of many looming tasks

The truth in every now
outshines the constructs of tomorrow
There’s no trouble
that you ever have to borrow
Every moment
brings its own illumination
So you never need to wander
in the dark.

Guidance Prayer

Today, Spirit, I entrust
all my thoughts to you
because I must —
I know the courses I have run
have many sinkholes, many ruts
And if I set out on my own,
their deep-worn tracks
will ever thrust me
down the same false paths again

Spirit, today I float
with your calm breath to guide me
Hold my quiet hope
a growing light inside me
Let your wisdom cope
with every maze my thought may chase
Let me fly with you
Impart your grace
Wean me of those old recursions
Make me new
Let me be your mirror, through and through
Let me grasp, in this and every minute
your vast and shining world
and my place in it.

Returning

There is evidence of kindness everywhere
In the undercurrents of life
the breathing and the circulation
the giving and receiving
the ebbing and the flowing
providing every need

There is kindness in the stillness of the stars
and in the waxing moon
and in the season’s turning
Soft fall of darkness
and the leaves’ returning
to the earth

Everything that sets out
comes home sometime
As sure as breath
As sure as tides
It finds its place
in the matrix of kindness
It finds its welcome
rejoins its own.

Hope for the World

(From the biking philosophers’ notebook)

If the world is separate from us,
All its systems
waltzing madly onward
toward our doom,
And we have no reign, no reins —
If someone else has made these bad decisions
And we, as pawns, must pay
in servitude and stress
There is no hope

But if we dream the world
in our sleep and in our aspirations
And if the world is breathed into its being
by our collective breath
And by our inspiration
Then nothing that we see exists outside ourselves
And as we heal ourselves
we’ll breathe it whole.

East Coast Countenance

When you walk
I see how you are harnessed
by the shoulders, by the head

When you look out of those eyes
preset to see
only what is permitted,
furtively scanning for recognition
I feel the burden there

When you smile
Towers of blockage fall
The light of you streams forth
just in a quick flash
and I know
there is hope for us all.

Alchemy

Here is an alchemy:
Not lead to gold
But led by the golden
glow from within
that homes to its source-light
steady, unerring

Here is the alchemy
that we behold
as we leave the old focus
and step forward, bold:
This light-washed vision,
All dullness resolving
till everything shimmers
in life’s vibrant tones

This is the alchemy:
Not something changed
But something conceived anew—
Radical point of view
Suddenly lightyears from what we’ve been told
What we had thought was so
Now so illumined
everything that we see
is gold.

Reclamation

After the voice of scorn was banished
Other voices began to rise
tentative at first,
but gaining strength from each other
The voice of wonder
The voice of “of course!
You have a right to joy;
Of course goodness is the organizing principle!”
The voice of liberation
The voice of exaltation
The voice of a continual elation
Realizing every silenced hope
could claim its place
and start to sing again.

The meaning of hope

For those of you who never found
in the box of proffered choices
anything that fed your soul
Who turned back sadly
While others raced towards goals
for which you had no interest

For those of you who never thought it fair
to have to settle for the duties of the day
Who couldn’t bring yourselves to care
for all the regulations of the game
Though voices of authority intoned
“Grow up, assume your role, and play”

Take heart, for that same discontent
Reveals another world beyond the game
A place where all your heart’s desires are met
Where what you are receives its right acclaim

What you must give may not be found in stores
May not be priced and parceled, stamped and screened
But it is real, and when you bring it forth
It starts to map the world for which we dream
Each of your earnest hopes affirms the presence
Of your beloved, unarguable essence.
