Riding High

Riding the high of the day’s beauty  –
clarity of air, and so many
elegant plays of water –
sun rays through vapor,
raindrops on trees,
fog lifting, clouds drifting,
all of the scents wide awake

Riding the high of the day’s beauty  –
long worked-for things coming together,
hope coming visible,
the deep anchoring truth of our being
pulling us into clarity,
focusing us in joy.

Things of beauty

In our little hovel cabin
the only things of beauty
are the fire, and the warmth it gives,
and the corresponding glow
in our faces, from the fire’s heat
and the day’s work, and the comfort
that we have with each other

And a few good books,
and some words of hope,
and the darkness,
once we’ve gone to bed,
and the quiet, deep enough
to hear a heartbeat.

Lesson

And if I need a daily lesson
in the lifting of the fog,
in the endlessness of beauty,
in the nature of the Life
that powers each of us,
Look – it is here

And I don’t mind whatever work I need to do
to hold in thought the brilliance,
and also see how gently
the lesson is delivered –
the layers of light and layers of enlightenment,
just what I need,
just what I need today.

Art Appreciation

And if I can’t play the music
that drenches me
with the presence of beauty,
that flows down my arms
and fills my mouth
and ripples me with shimmers
from the sun

Perhaps this standing in it
is still worth something —
perhaps this gratitude
for its existence,
this rising joy, all-in reverberation
still serves a function —
gives the music someone who believes.

Attended

Before the sun set,
the first silvered wisps of fog
began to form low in the valley,
tending slightly upward
as they drifted south

Five minutes later
the valley had begun to fill,
fog rising between trees
setting off the different distances,
the fall colors looked more red
amid the rising clouds

Meanwhile, behind the hills,
the sun had set
and the sky was turning red,
marbled and magnificent

And I thought: here, just here,
is exactly where I want to be,
above this valley and on this journey,
upward as I’m led, attended by beauty.

Others, too

Others, too, have moments
of quiet beauty. Others, too,
feel the tingling lift,
Life revealing its most tender secrets,
Life compelling them
to give their gifts

Let me not think,
amid this shimmering unveiling,
that I must hurriedly proclaim it,
make it known,
for everyone is held in the unfailing
light through which these wondrous views are shown.
