Witness

It’s so easy, on this wide land,
to see the Allness
and the presence of desire and joy
that rises up to meet it,
sustained in its acceptance,
the full enfolding of embrace
that sees, and so defines
each entity that basks in its all-presence

It’s so easy, then,
to feel the Allness –
Spirit filling me like breath,
like wings, bearing my heart
up into the blue, where it unites
with everything alive.

I am the one

Trying on the admission
that I am the one –
I am the one who needs to understand,
I am the one called
to make radical transformation
in my own mind,
to have my whole sense of being
reframed – to find my context
was much too small

I am the one who needs to change,
I am the one who needs to act,
I am the one who needs to listen,
listen to I Am,
listen to the One.

Trust

The One you can trust
has always been here –
you’ve seen it in lights
that glow, that flicker,
that sparkle, that shine,
you’ve felt it in moments
when you could suddenly tell
exactly where your heart is

You have caught at it
like fishing for the moon in a lake,
you have held it
like a sunbeam across the floor
you have sensed it,
but maybe haven’t known
that the clasp that holds it right to you
is trust

Learn to trust in little ways
or give yourself to it fully,
and feel its unmistakable embrace,
and feel its unimaginable grace.

A Large Place

In the place where everyone is alone,
alone with their breath,
alone with their struggles

In the place where you are alone,
regardless of site,
regardless of others

In the place where no one can come
because it’s the innermost depth
of your thoughts

There is a truth that still companions you,
that only needs the space it has
to open out infinity, deliver you into the large place
where you can breathe free and see clear
and fill the purpose your heart is hoping for.

Absolute Value

We learn the value
of things we thought were nothing,
things we thought were torments,
places we thought empty

All these must bow,
they are compelled,
just at their striking point,
to show their truth, release their mystery,
must give place to the law
that only blessing comes,
and only good is given –
the law that turns them upside down,
makes of their threats
windows to heaven.

Proper Nourishment

Let me live in the place
where there’s no game of better,
no game of not better either –
no grades or ratings,
no reflexive search
for what is wrong,
to make occasion
for being right

Let me wean myself
from that addicting food
which never satisfies,
but keeps me craving for
another dose of wrong
to point my finger at,
to show my smarts against –
It doesn’t have to be that way

Nudged by the wild plant lady,
I took a bite from the new growth
of douglas fir –
It was, as she said, refreshing,
surprising citrus before expected resin,
still tender to the tooth

And as she said,
I felt that it could nourish me
for many miles of walking,
and I could think of it as a gift,
I could be mindful every time I thought
of biting off another shoot –
take what is freely offered,
leave plenty behind.

Choose Life

We all have been under the pall,
all been asked
to choose a side and stick with it,
all felt sickened in the fear of losing,
or being found left out,
stranded in a faulty choice

There are rules of valiance –
rules of how to choose,
how to stand with courage,
how to fall with grace,
but one still faces
the daunting consequence,
dark underside of loss, of shame, of grief

And so consider:
Nothing else alive is ever asked
to make a choice like that.
It is plenty
for every living thing to answer
to it’s own calling – to grow
in its own place and time,
to be directed by its own essence
in every moment of its being

If that’s enough
for this wild strawberry,
holding raindrops as it blooms,
then it’s enough for us –
to make no choice, to take no sides,
let no division compromise our love.

Clarify

I call on the ever-present
nature of all things
to speak up clearly
as the inner voice
in all of us

to let us each feel
how grounded we are
in the sovereignty
of that which is

and all these swirls —
tornados and manipulations
barking out conformity,
herding us to fear

may roar above the surface
but don’t come where we are,
don’t change a thing
except perhaps
to clarify our truth.

The present ground

I keep finding myself going back
to the image of the blessed ground
and how, before anything has yet appeared,
the light plays on it,
and in that light, a silent warble,
a bright impulse of joy,
a calm

In that calm, the sweet assurance —
the presence of the law that guides all growth,
the way that everything that is
shares all these properties —
all that develops
will always bring them forth.

Light Traveling

In light traveling, as I slowly learn,
I must be vigilant
not to put my weight down,
not to stick my fingers
into any situation,
lest I be grabbed
and wrenched downwards,
lest I smudge and darken
my perception

In light traveling
I must hold myself
open to the wind
and to the logic of Allness,
and everything that light touches,
so I am borne up
in the fabric of everything,
so I am woven true.
